Default My Flash Tuner Experience

Well, I finally went out and got a tune for my baby. I see a lot of reports of what the flasher has been doing for the BA/BF brigade, but I would like to report on how I went.

I had a JMM dev3HL cam fitted almost 12 months ago, and with exhaust etc, i rattled up 132rwkW on the dyno (yes I know dyno's lie, but without a track here, I never ran a 1/4). I was happy but I did notice that below 2500rpm, motor was running rich (think 10:1 AFR)

After considering a run to melb for the tune, I consulted with a few people as to a tuner here in Adelaide, and came up with Tilbrooks Dyno and Tune. A quick call revealed that they contracted flash tunes to Martin Donnen who some people may remember was one of the leaders in cracking the EEC computers very early in the piece.

Anyway, day one I received the car back with a figure of 158rwkW (I said they lie), but the old bum-o-meter registered a vast improvement. There were a few things I wasn't quite happy with, so Martin was happy to take me to his own workshop for a play. The result was an extremely healthy 142.2rwkW and a torque curve that supplied about 400 nM across the whole rev range.
The results: Bear in mind it was a quick run in 2nd.

Prep Run: PS, large file

The actual run:

Anyway. I am chuffed now as the old girl runs beautifully. and the whole exercise cost me $1400

Hi Mack

Do you mind posting up the name of Martins workshop? As I should have my edit in about a week & after a couple more mods I want to arrange a custom tune next year. At the moment im leaning towards getting it done locally for the obvious advantages eg if you need to take it back(considering KPM very good reputation). Rather than the trip to Melbourne so as Chris at BPR can work his magic.

Martin's actual workshop doesn't do public work, but if you ring Mark at Tilbrooks in hampstead gardens, and tell him flash tuner, he'll organise a time when martin can come in and do it. He is very knowledgeable and will be happy to go that bit extra to make you happy. I think tilbrooks dyno is very generous (see my 160rwkW) but definately a good tune in the end.

Damn...look at how flat that torque curve is!!

Pretty impressive for a mild 4.0L

Yeah, it pulls bloody hard all the way up. I had considered bigger cam and headwork, but I'll be happy with this for 6 months or so.

We touched on the trans shift points, but when I get some time we'll be playing with them some to maximise the power. Looking forward to taking her to mallala early next year, and a drag strip when we get one or I come to heathcote.

Good to hear another dev3hl cam pulling some good numbers with a tune.

The flat torque curve and masive amount is very good too.
