Default Squealing noise from rear?

hey guys

been enjoying my xr6 so far (hence why you havent seen me around here for the last coupla weeks :p) but ive noticed that once or twice in those last few weeks, the first time i start up the car and leave off from the side of the road, i get this odd squealing noise for up to 3 seconds from the rear left of the car before it eventually goes away and doesnt bother me again for a while.

ive had a look and nothing seems to be grinding, im guessing its my handbrake? just had it adjusted not long ago...

It is more than likely the handbrake, and will only really go away with new discs and new handbrake shoes, but then the noise will reappear after anywhere from 6 weeks to 12 months later anyway. It afflicts AUs, BAs, to a lesser extent E series cars, plenty of Commodores and Magnas etc, as they all run the sane handbrake design.

If you hear the same sort of noise all the time, at speeds over around 40km/h, then it is more likely to be wheel bearings.

nup only when doing low speed manoeuvres (say for instance exiting a carpark, not necessarily involving tight turns). as soon as im above say 15kph the noise is gone.

guess i wont let it bother me too much then, as long as its not causing any long term damage

My Futura does the same.

Theres a faint squeal for a few seconds then its gone. I usually only hear it once. As soon as the car gets up to speed, I can stop at a set of lights or something, and there is no squeal when I take off.

I figured it was the handbrake, when I used my handbrake at a set of lights and it squealed when I started moving again.

Just one of those things.

my money is on the handbrake if the noise is at low speeds. once the car starts getting more speed the brake pads will snap back if they are rubbing so the noise will go.
