Default Daewoo Matiz....I know I know :(

I need a little help here, does anyone know anything about the Daewoo Matiz, apart from the fact that they are a horrible looking underpowered shoebox. My mrs has her heart set on one so I need to know whether there are actually any good points to them. They are relatively cheap and are easy to find with sub 100k on them, they also seemed to be favoured by women who just used them for shopping. Well that's what I've seen anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

I shouldn't reply to this.. lol

As far as I know, they weren't initially available with power-steer or autobox, but the later ones had P/steer as an option, and the upper-spec levels had auto as an option.

Don't know if you'd want a 3 cyl, 800cc auto...

Given that Daewoo is dead here, spare parts may become an issue in time, but from all I've read, Daewoo's 3 cylinder motors are pretty tough.

Don't imagine they'd be very safe though. Pretty cheap to run. 3 spark plugs and 600ml of oil

Mate I am hearing you but with that woman when she gets an idea in her head nothing will get it out. My only hope now is that she doesn't like the feel of the car as that is very important to her.

She's driving a 1973 Datsun 1200 atm so I suppose anything is an upgrade from that.

Get her to drive one in the rain. I had one as a hire car for a week and it was scary. No grip, body roll, understeer, no power to even think about overtaking, etc etc etc. My missus and i were terrified in this bloody thing. Much prefer something else, like a mirage.

A corolla would be a much better option.

Parts/repairs on Gaywoo's are a killer. The Rola's on the other hand are bullet proof and wreckers stocking parts are ubiquitous.

A friends dad has one and like someone has said earlier spare parts are available through holden but most being obsolete.
If your going to get one dont get one of the later ones with power steerig and auto they are evenmore of a disgrace for acceleration, giving your wife roller blades would be a quicker alternative.
On a postive note im about 6ft 1" and I have no troubles with space or comfort int the interior although I wouldnt wanna be involved in any sort of crash in one.

NO! No, no, no. There are so many other options out there that are so much better, would you seriously be happy with somebody you love driving in a car that tiny and unsafe. There are much better cars out there, think Mitsubishi Mirage, Mazda 121, Ford Festiva, Suzuki Swift, and if you can push the budget a little more ($6,500) you could even manage a Toyota Echo, all much better options.

If you don't mind me asking, what is it about the Matiz that your wife finds so appealing?

Spend the $5k on putting a CA18DET in the Datsun

Nah I'd look for a mid 90's Lancer or Corolla before a Matiz.

Is it the 4 doors and economical motor that has her hooked?

If so, a Diahatsu Sirion would be a better buy. They seems to be better built, safer (twin airbags) and are only a 1L.

I still remember the power specs 40.5kw (haaa yes, it had the .5).. I think the Matiz was 33 or 37?? They also had 15inch wheels standard.

BUT, if this is just a suburban run about, shopping cart, they are good for that.

I read somewhere that it took 22 seconds or so to go from 0-100km/h and by the time it got to 100km/h it had covered 400m.

If your after one of those tiny cheap fuel efficient things go the Sirion as said above. You may be able to get a GTvi version with the 1.3l for that money and they go quite good.

I worked on a Matiz the other week. Wasnt really impressed. Plastic manifold fell to peices and was leaking coolant as fast as I could fill it up.

Just remember, most chicks DGAF about acceleration, top speed or handling. It really comes down to features, priceing and maybe a little product perception.

Show her the the facts;

The aweful safety rating (maybe show her a Youtube crash test video).

The fact that parts/ labour are going to be expensive.

That other cars in her price range are better equiped, safer, more plentiful etc.

I'd buy any E series falcon (OK apart from a EA) over one of those death traps anyday. And they'd have the advantage of 4 wheel disc brakes, airbags, crumple zones in crashes etc.

She likes the looks of the Matiz but she has also commented on the Sirion so I might try to push that way a little. She used to have a 94 Lancer until it was squashed by a tree lol.

I've tried with the Proton Satria, Lancers, Corrollas and the like but she just says "but the matiz is newer" and won't listen to me tell her it is rubbish and will get beaten up in the driveway by the XR lol.

I'd tell her to keep the Datto but it is a with no heater and not safe at all, the damn thing is a death trap IMO. At least the matiz has twin airbags. Looks like I'm screwed.

I thought my mums WF Festiva was a piece of crap, it looks and handles like a luxury ride compared to a Daewoo Matiz....

ffs. What is with the constant EA bashing from some people? And they may not want a big Falcon.

In my opinion, I wouldn't go a Daewoo. One of my housemates has a Daewoo Nubira and it is a complete lemon. The Matiz is cheaper and nastier than it. I'd try to get something with a longer bonnet as well. A stubby bonnet means shorter crumple zones.

Are you sure?

I see no redeeming qualities in the Matiz.
Many, many nicer cars. She needs to shop around rather than look at one model and remain steadfast.

I’d be pushing for a Mazda 2, Focus Honda Jazz if I could and if not I’d get the best tyres know to man fitted on the Maitz.

On the plus side the guy who designed a lot of nice cars (Alfas, BMWs, VW’s, Subarus, Lexi, Bugattis, etc) also designed the little Daewoo. The Maitz started off as an Ital Design proposal for a new Fiat Cinquecento. Fiat didn’t have the money for a new small car design, Daewoo did so hey presto a slightly different nose and we have the Daewoo Maitz.
