People I know in Holdens report people being "let go " just about daily. Commodores selling OK but Im not sure they are making money.

The whole Australian automotive manufacturing industry is in a lot of trouble. Not just Holden and Ford, but the component suppliers as well. This space is going to see very sad new in the not too distant future.

And thats the issue. How can they continue to be profitable when they discount so much.

I know of engineers being let off, and leaving, let alone manufacturing.

Holden have been clever to some degree by gradually and continually let people go on a daily basis rather than announce whole sale changes like this announcement, and like Ford have done....
Its created the perception that Holden have been traveling ok.. which they aren't..

Absolutley, They are very clever at Holden in keeping out of the news when they have bad news, but sure know how to get into the news when some thing good happens

They starting bringing in casual labour 2 years ago, there's heaps of them in our area now.

Yeah, three month contracts and you have to get rid of them after 12 months. Union rules. Had some blokes come through that would have been perfect employees then 12 months comes up and POOF they are gone again. Makes my head hurt all the people that have come and gone the last 5 years.

Not anymore, we've had one guy who's been on a contract for nearly 18 months. They've changed it now. They have become open ended, not just for a certain amount of time.

I am sure he sleeps better at night now............

Probably had to change the rules so they had labor to keep the engine plant running. Heard some good stories of engine plant employees finding other employment recently.

Its gotta suck knowing that you can be disposed of anytime the company feels like it. Feel sorry for them.

There are business in Townsville that have foreign workers mainly chinese filipino on 457 visas they put them in a house pay for their water electricity rent and take that out of their wages

The 3 big plants will probably be gone in the next 10 years
Mitsubishi in Adelaide has shut up shop no more large cars out of there Holden and Ford are on the way out with all these job cuts and climate change on the agenda

Does Toyota make cars in Australia like they use to or are they all imported these days

Toyota make the Camry and Aurion in Altona, but from what my mate who works for them says they are losing $2000 on every Camry they export, and exports make up a very large portion of their production, so things aren't so good there either.

Since Toyota makes the Camry in 7 other plants around the world it wouldn't be hard for them to shut up shop and just export it from somewhere else.

So will we send back all the overseas workers now the economy is starting to slow down or do we keep them here and let them force down our conditions?

That sounds a bit racist, but as i think about it, it sorta does make sense. We have a lot of people move to Aus(Because Aus rocks) and it has taken away a lot of jobs as they can be hired and paid for less $$'s.
Australia has too many importing of goods as majority of Aussies don't trust aussie products.
It's either quality or cheap. Most Aussie products are in the middle.
People either get quality cars from Europe, quality electrics from Japan or they just get the nasty cheap stuff from China and Thailand.

Thats my opinion anyway.
