Not sure how govt will help, unless you want them sticking their noses in all your emails. You should be able to mark it as spam which will stop that one email address, keep that up until it stops or get a better spam filter that will automatically block most of them. I dont know how they work, but they do.

They are grubs who operate overseas. They ask you for your personal details and bank account details. Most will then have innocent parties who they then defraud, deposit fraudulently obtained money into your account and then ask you to keep a "10% commission" and you then send the rest via Western Union money transfer. You literally get money for nothing but with Australian and internation fraud squads closing your bank account all the while your identity gets stolen so the said grub uses your identity to defraud others. Then the authorities come looking for you.

Back at my old work we didn't bother blocking individual addresses as they has some sort of script that would simply add a 1 or A to the email address and it would get past our filters. Then they decided to invest in some proper spam filtering software

Does your ISP offer spam filtering? Depends on your plan, they may charge a small monthly fee to add it, might be worth it though.

Another thought, if you use the same email for everything, like signing up to websites you may or may not completely feel comfortable with, setup a spam email address. I have an email address with my ISP which I only use for family and another for business. I have several gmail accounts I use for websites, one which I used here and other forums I feel pretty safe with, and another for all things dodgy or business websites (those who may be motivated to sell your email address as part of a list). The last ones spam filter is chocka with spam every day. And no, its not because I sign up to porn sites before anyone suggests it. Gmail offers free spam filters and its pretty good. I imagine hotmail is similar.

As someone else said above, spammers have software that guesses at email addresses and just mass sends them and alters their own address to try and get past filters. Many dont even have an email address that exists, its just a pseudo email. Good spam software somehow stops 99% of it.
