Question Toyota also Scaling Back

At Toyota, effects of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan mean manufacturing workers at its Altona plant will work a half-day shift from May 9.

Staff will be paid 75 per cent of their normal wages as the factory operates on a reduced schedule of 50 per cent, while a similar outlook is expected in June.

The announcement will affect 3300 staff who produce the Camry, Hybrid Camry and Aurion models in Melbourne's west.

Toyota's manufacturing director Chris Harrod said the response was necessary to address short-term supply issues caused by the disaster.

"We intend to resume 100 per cent vehicle production as quickly as possible," Mr Harrod said.

The company has promised to minimise delivery delays.

Not good for Toyota Australia. Things aren't looking too good back home in Japan. I really feel for the Japanese people.

Lets just see if they really do resume at 100% production. The Aussie dollar has got to be killing their export competitiveness.

With Toyota building 4800 camrys and aurions in May and June (and not being able to guarantee anything beyond that), Ford making around 3500 a month (trying to be very positive), and Holden doing 6000 (if they dont come up against parts shortages), How many people actually think any of the suppliers can actually last with these numbers. The local suppliers are screwed if these numbers continue.

The auto industry is not out of the woods from the fallout of the earthquake, there may be more issues yet

But dont take my word for it, heres part of an auditors report from one of the largest auto suppliers in australia. And this report was released before the Tsunami even hit Japan. I could provide a few reports from other auto suppliers that are in more debt than this company.

Without further qualifying our conclusion expressed above, we draw attention to Note 1 in the financial report which indicates the consolidated entity incurred a net loss of $577,847 during the half year ended December 2010. At balance date, the consolidated entity had net current liabilities of $11,743,124. In addition, during the half year review period, the consolidated entity did not meet its banker's loan convenants, resulting in the bank's loan facility being subject to review and possible repayment, at its discretion. These conditions, along with other matters set out in note 1, indicate the existance of a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt about the consolidated entity's ability to continue as a going concern and therefore, whether it will realise its assets and extinguish its liabilities, in the normal course of business and at the amounts stated in the financial reports.

You work for Toyota?, got a question for you.. Why is it that the Aussie market Camry from 2002-2006 was a unique model that resembled the international/USDM model but was actually a reskin of the 1997-2001 Camry? Is the current generation (2006-current) Aussie built Camry just the international version or is it another local reskin job? cheers.

I heard none of the panels from the USDM/Japan model would fit the local Camry. Is the current generation (2006-current) Aussie built Camry just the international version or is it another local reskin job? cheers.

resembled yes... but with mods to suit Aussie conditions and a different source of most parts.

As for the current, it along with the Aurion are more Australian design based now...

Cheers, do you know in what way is the international/USDM camry not suitable for Aussie conditions? Would parts out of the current generation camry fit under the aussie camry (e.g. in Japan/Asia they have the Grande AWD Camry.. would that drivetrain slot into a local camry>)
