Default In car footage recording.

Just after some advice/tips for recording footage in car. Im heading to Lakeside this weekend for some happy laps with the VW Watercooled guys and i want to record a little bit of footage.

Im going to go buy a windscreen mount for my phone today (HTC Velocity) and test it to see if its any good, if not ill buy a Go Pro/Contour et al.

Thanks in advance

I've got a Go Pro and related vehicle mount you can use for the weekend if you'd like to try it out. Shoot me a PM if you're keen.

You will not get through scruterneering with a phone mount as they would not stop the phone in a crash.
I use a GoPro and it is designed for this type of application. You need something that is designed for the G's that can be experienced, as well as the anti shake that the extreme cameras like a Gopro offer. Any phone will be sho shaken up, you would not be able to use the footage.
The best about a gopro is you can stick them on the outside and get some good video of tyre smoke when drifting.

One of the HD camera from On-site cameras is a good alternative .... as it also shows speed on-screen as well if you get the GPS-integrated units.

Check out their youtube videos of footage from Lakeside ... audio comes out crisp as well. Also Fullnoise's in-cab truck vids are good as well to show quality.

I can second the quality of On-site cameras. That is the one we have. Good solid unit and records cleanly.

Never though of all that, i just went and recorded some footage with phone mount and phone and there is next to no shaking. But if i cant use a phone mount then i guess its useless

hard to go past go-pro, certainly one of the best in the business, and they have multitudes of upgrades and different mounts to suit anything.

is the on'site stuff a similar price?

As soon as I saw the thread title appear, the first thing I thought was GoPro. You can get them in a motorsports edition that have their own suction cup mounts. http://www.launchhelmetcams.com.au/g...o2-motorsports

And of course, there are many other dedicated in-car cameras that stick to the windscreen available on the market too.

Well im going to borrow Grunters Go-Pro, with view to purchase one. Now this day isnt a full on track day but speeds will be quick so i think the Go-Pro will be a more viable option, also will be good for runs through the twisties.

Cosmic GT's recording from the show us ya GT section gives you a good idea of what the GoPro HD Hero 2 quality is like

sounds sweet too - no bias of course

We bought a GoPro with the car pack for a mates 21st... can vouch for their quality.

The HD version looks very good too! Wasn't out when we got him his though.

I have used heaps of incar camera and I honestly think the GoPro is an over rated big box of a thing and the audio is poor.

My current favorite is the Replay XD1080 which retail for $339 from www.racerecall.com

Here is a sample I took of a mates car at a club day recently.

Looking forward to testing the new Ion Air Pro as they have some fantastic capabilities.

makattkd probably has a point there, but if you are really concerned about sound quality, you can get an external microphone becasue the Hero2 has a microphone input.

Just went and recorded some footage, i had it on the windscreen (Inside) and door. On the outside the windnoise is fairly prevalent. Inside looks ok but i forgot to change it so its upside down ill fix it before i upload it
