Default paddock truck v8

I was out over my mates today and hes got this old thames truck about a 8 tonner with this ford V 8 in it ,he thinks a 351 {which still runs** was def a clevland v8 i wasnt sure how to identifey it .Did they come out origanaly with a 351 in them ? Cheers Boingz

Pretty hard to indentify externally, your best is to pull out a spark plug, wind the engine over by hand, and measure the piston's stroke using a thin piece of wire. From memory a 302 is 3.5 inches(around 90mm) and a 351 is 4inch or just over 100mm. hope this helps cheers Pat

any photos ???

i dont think that they had clevos as original. we had one on the farm in the `70s and it was a 6 cylinder diesel. built in 1964 so long before the clevo.

did the truck have a little short slopey bonnet or a a more conventional shaped long bonnet.


this is a `65 model, the same style as our old `64.


this is called a " K " series. these were built in the later part of the `60s.

When I were a lad, there was one getting around Ballarat which the father of a mate put a 351 in.

Towies were known for putting V8s into old trucks that had either 6cyl petrols or diesels

a cleveland V8 would have been a much cheaper repower option to the original engine and have a heap more power

I remember being at a farm in about 1983 when they pulled an old 50s 4tonne ford truck out of the scrub where it had been sitting for about 15 years
It had a flathead V8, no exhaust manifold, the carb was full of rat droppings, the engine and gearbox were both had water in them and the fuel tank had rusted away

To get it going they blew all the crap from the carb, drained the gearbox and engine oil until the water stopped and the oil began, used a boat fuel tank on the passenger floor and fitted a battery. Cranked it over a few times and it just fired up. had some fun with it blasting up and down the farm tracks, flatheads sound bloody awesome with the exhaust straight out of the engine
It'd have to be worth some money these days as a project vehicle

I have a shed load of those trucks. Seven in total ranging from small 2 tonners to large 7.5 tonners.

The Larger Forward control version had a 300 CID petrol six or a 330 Diesel six. They where built from 1957 to 1964.

The Larger Normal control trucks started in 1962 had the same engines up to 1964. After that they had the same engine as the D Series and the name changed from Thames Trader NC to Ford K Series.

They never had V8s but I am sure some would have been re-powered.

The diesel powered trucks where the best. My largest truck has the 330 diesel, five speed gearbox and Eaton no 3 2 speed axle.

The one pictured above with the short nose is a baby one, the 4 tonner and will most likely have the 300 petrol or the 330 diesel. The lower truck is on 16inch wheels so it is also a baby. If it is a 2 tonner it will have a large 4 cylinder engine.

The engines are the same as those in late Fordson Super Major tractors.

I have a lot of information on these and a lot of parts.

from memory,

302c 3" stroke x 4" bore (about 75mm x 100mm)
351c 3.5" stroke x 4" bore
400c 4" stroke x 4" bore

the one we had was the forward control model . 7 or maybe 7.5 ton . the diesel 6 and 2 speed diff. i cant remember if it was 4 or 5 speed gear box.

it was used daily carrying mill logs, post, hay, livestock, etc often somewhat overloaded and i cant remember it ever giving any trouble. it wasnt the fastest thing around but not much would stop it.

that was the first truck i drove when i was probably about 12 or 13 years old.

The 7.5 tonners here in Aus had the 4 speed box standard up to end 1961 and the the 5 speed after that. 2 speed diff was also standard.

At the time they where the largest truck sold by Ford Australia.

I also used to drive them on our farm at 13 years old. The sound of that diesel engine is something else.

pretty sure ours was a `64 model .. the same as me.

it replaced a `61 model F600.

That would make your truck the very last of the Mk2 Thames Traders and it would indeed have had a 5 speed box with the larger 18500lb 2 speed Eaton axle and a GVM of 223 Cwt or 25500lbs.

In 1965 it would have been replaced by the Ford D750.

last i heard of the truck after dad sold it was the new owner left it parked without the handbrake on while opened a gate and it ran down a hill into a tree. shame because it was a good truck. that was the early `80s.

Well i did another check 2day it was parked up against this fence ,its just got ford across the front squarish cab ,i measuered the stroke with a peice of 2mm rubber pipe after takin the plug out and turnrd it over by hand it measured 4 inches its only gotta 2 barrel manifold on it and mounted up to what looks like the origanal 5 speed box , it was used for carting horses around but well rusted out now the pan on the back would make a good shed lol .well start it up this weekend if its not chuckin it down

It sounds like a D Series. Does it look like this?

If so it would most likely have had a 240 CID or 300 CID I6 Petrol from new. My truck in the pic has a 380CID Diesel.

Hey Dave, do you remember the D Series that Greeny used to have at the wreckers? It had a 351 in it and was a rocket. Sounded bloody awesome too!
We had a D1000 at the time, with a 300 Canadian 6 in it.
She had quite a bit of torque the old girl.

My sister has a couple of Thames trucks on the farm, but they're pretty cactus now.
