[Generally which use more fuel per 100km - a typical rotary or a typical V8]

I'm assuming you're just asking of fuel consumption comparisons?

From what I've heard, they consume about the same. However, the engine is usually put in small cars (and therefore probably driven fast), using the rotary's advantages. Rotaries are also arguably the best candidates for turbocharging (in front of inline 4s and 6s), which should improve economy, or at least efficiency of fuel spent per kw.

About the same roughly
The Mazda RX8 got 16L/100km, and the new GT is 15L/100km.
I have read on other forums that RX8 owners are averaging around 12L/100km at highway speeds though, which i would imagine the new GT would be under 10L

I had a Series 1 Rx7 13b and drove it pretty hard most of the time and it used heaps. I now have worked 351 and it uses heaps more.

I love Rotaries. They have a unique sound like a Boxer engine or a V8 engine does. On topic I have also heard you have to use special oil developed by Mazda when servicing the new RX8 and it aint cheap ($100-120 by vague recollection). Very expensive considering rotors are meant to be thirsty on oil.

Its a sound cherished by all who love harsh raspy sounds, not unlike a whipper-snipper operated within a garden shed.

my girlfriend has a s4 13b n/t....it uses way more fuel than the ford...but my fords a 6

sit in top gear on the freeway in the mazda and its nearly doin 3000 rpm just over 100k/ph

Well it all came down to how drive it, how it been tune as to how much fuel it will use.

i love rotaries, my uncle used to own a highly modified 13BTurbo'd RX2 coupe.
that thing FLEW!!
he also has a bunch of mates he do circuit racing with Rotory powered cars, they sound awsome, and like Mitchay said, they have a very uniques sound that i guss you either love or hate

as for Fuel economy, that was the reason my uncle sold his rotary.....

I can't stand the sound of a rotary - they're like an overgrown lawnmower! Each to their own but.

I'd have a VY SS/BA XR8 over an RX-8 any day of the week - for the amount of fuel the RX-8 uses, you get stuff all car. The V8's are at least usable - tow a boat/trailer/with couple of mates in the car and a boot full of luggage - and STILL use less fuel than the RX-8 with two people in it.

Rotaries are still a 4 stroke cycle but there is combustion in each rotor housing every revolution.

I love the little things. A friend had a cappella with a stock but freash 12A in it and the thing absolutely flew.

Very thirsty engines. Id have an MSPRE RX8 but would prefer an REW Rx7.

Bridgeported 13B and supercharged windsors just as desirable in my books... the latter being slightly more practical tho!!

not really wanting to turbo but i wanna get some more oomph out of my girlfriends...
thinkin a nice exhaust system and brideport..flash tuning or wateva

Porting very labour intensive. And most rotary workshops are pretty expensive. No idea how much but i reckon you'd be up for a couple of grand.

Bridgeporting, j porting, monster porting etc are very hard on the engine and will drastically reduce lifespan. Maby a mild/street porting job??

man i have no idea hey...i understand the basics of a rotary buts thats it...i just want more power out of it as its n/a and i don't have money for turbos...if i did the I6 would be getting it hehehe

Rotors are easy to make go hard but they are getting more expensive to work on..
i had a Series 2 RX7,13b Extended Mild port turbo, lightened and balanced rotors, 3mm seals, dowelled up with high tensile rods holding the housings together..3in exhaust turbo back, front mount intercooler, injectors, fuel pump, bov..

basically to get the above done on your standard rotor will cost about 4k..

and it used more fuel then my mates tickled 5L commo... but it also got down the strip about 2.5seconds faster :P

Good info on porting

Check out the periphial port No idle below 2,000rpm.

IIRC they used to run monster ports in the old rotor bangers (rx2/3) at bathurst. 10,000km engine lifespan.

I like Rotaries

But give me a V8 or possibly a 6 over one any day though.

Rotaries arent the most reliable engines.

yeah it was a turbo motor i got for 1k... dropped that in, then spend 4k on it..
these days, you can get a manifold and turbo off a turbo rotor and whack it onto an NA rotor.. but you have to fiddle around with making the motor injected if you want real gains..

Who says?
they are like any other engine, look after them and they will be fine..
ive seen rotors running at over 300,000k's NO rebuild.. and still going fine..

they only really start to get unreliable when you start to really modify them..
i blew mine up in 3 days.. which is what warrented the new turbo motor..
the new turbo motor has done 150,000's now and still going strong.. (my mate owns it now)

my girls one was her dads since birth....only 140 thou and its got issues...the other day it was stalling with the clutch in...had mad clutch drams..master and slave cylinders keep on stuffing up...sometimes it seems as if it running like a mule...others its really nice
i personally love it cos of the manual and its auto adjusting suspension and they way the steering tightens in tight corners

i dunno what the go is with that..
i had crazy clutch dramas.. and i had problems with blowing boxes..
i ended up with a brass button, 1200lb pressure plate, and a series 5 rx7 5spd.. never had any issues again..

the car is a weapon.. one of the things you had to be nice too or it would bite you.. like bringing it on boost at 130km/h and find yourself facing the guard rail on the M4..
