Hey guys,
I've got a series III AU XR8 ute.. when I'm reversing and I turn the wheel to the left more than 1 turn or so I hear a hideous grinding noise from the front driver's side tyre. This noise just started a few days ago when I was backing out to head home from work. Any ideas? The noise does not occur when I'm moving in a forward gear, nor can I see any evidence of the wheel fouling on the bodywork. I'm thinking the wheel bearing could be shot, but I'm pretty sure I'm wrong

wheel bearing..
or one of your brake pads is worn out as when mine are almost gone they sort of grind every now and again usually during a slow speed turn.. with brakes on or off.. then they eventually start grinding ALOT..

Yeah - my first thought would be wheel bearing, but worst case scenario, it could be power steering, but given the info, not likely... just get a bearing kit and fix it yourself, of take it to kmart tyre and auto. Most mechs have no issues doing a bearing change...
