Dont risk it, a mild cam could be much bigger than the stock one and create problems.
Do a cam and edit, no problems, and no extra stuff ups.
Im speaking from experience, as this has happened to the missus' ute.

Been there done that... Get a mild cam off crow and a capa flash tuner and edit and you'll be rockin'. I went too hot with my cam which kills the bottom end, but I can go 250...

I had another cam, which was supposed to be the same, and it was called an SVO 210, though i cant remember the specs.
It was bought from a so called expert, and i heard that herrod used the same cams for the package, later he used a trick flow st1, so i reckon they could be similar to that cam.
Ill have to ask rob when i get the chance.

Yeah its an auto, very torquey, though it needs an edit, as the chip just doesnt do a good enough job.
My plans for it are an edit, stall, and some diff gears and it should easily see 13's everyday.

Being MAF based, the V8 computers can handle changes in airflow with the stock tune soooo much better the the MAP based I6 computers.

Ive got a Crane 2030 (216/220 @ .050") with stock computer. Idle is lumpy-ish and it can stall after emergency braking (very rarely), but everywhere else it is magic. I would imagine even better with a custom tune as the AFR's are still less than 11.0:1 at WOT.

So far its run a 14.15 @ 98mph in an auto XR8 ute with exhaust, std converter, and 3.9:1 gears.

Just wondering if mild cams + edit are a safe mod to do i.e. no long term mechanical problems?

The cam in the missus' ute would be as big as a 2030, with the 1.7 2 rollers, but it barely went when the chip shit it self.
The stock ECU wouldnt run it, even after a few klms, and ended up destroying the cats and fouling the plugs, maybe its more of a cam than i thought.
