AU1 XR8's had 185kw. Mine made 137kw at the wheels when it was stock (its an auto).

If you are looking to modify the engine (real mods...not nancy-boi CAI and K&N filter mods), then dont pay too much of a premium for an AUII/IIII XR8 220kw.

All the important parts are there in the AU1; GT40P heads, "Explorer" intake, 65mm TB, 70mm MAF, 24lb/hr injectors, and 4-1 shorty headers.

If you are going to leave it stock, then forget the AU1. Get one of the 220kw examples.....or a T3 :P

Only prob with that is that the AU1 has shocking brakes. If you want to keep it fairly stock then the best bet is an AUII/III with the 220kw engine. If you are going to mod big time just go the 200kw AUII, unless you prefer the bodykit on the AUIII.

I concede the std AU1 brakes are ordinary, but I wouldn't describe them as really shocking....certainly not with a decent set of pads (and I dont mean Bendix pads).

Are the std AUII/III brakes really that much better?

Or am I just an AU1 owner in denial..? LOL :P

AUI brakes are about the same as EL brakes. I had both my old EL and my XR for a few weeks and jumping out of the EL and into the XR the difference in braking was phenomenal. Going from the XR to the EL was just plain scary.

I've got RDA slotted rotors and EBC greenstuff pads, and I certainly wouldn't say the AU1 brakes are shocking. They're not going to put you through the windscreen if you stomp them, but they're alright. Having said that I'm about to upgrade to BA brakes...
If you do end up with an AU1, for well under $1k you can upgrade to BA brakes with slotteds, and that's including labour. If I was buying an XR8 though, I'd hang out for a good nick AU3, or at least a later AU2 with the 220. Might as well get the good stuff to start with, if you're going to spend money to get it to that point anyway!

I have an XR8 AU1 auto on LPG and still have close to 140rwkw on LPG ( a bit more for petrol, but not much). Mods include 1.72 RRs, 4-1 Herrods headers and BA XR8 Pod filter. The AU2s are definitely a little bit more powerful, but once you do exhaust and RRs, you will be up around 142 to 150 rwkw anyway, which is the same as the 200kw engine (auto/manual range). With an edit, of course, you can get the AU1 up to 200kw easy, as the AU1 is tuned to run on ULP, whereas the AU2/3 is tuned to run on PULP minimum - so get an edit on an AU1 tuned to 95 RON fuel, and you should get the extra 15kw.

Having said all that, if you can stretch to buy an AU2 or AU3, go for it - they are a better car all round, both in terms of engine and brakes, but also interior and bodykits (though I do like my bodykit too).

Yup, you are in denial, the AU1 brakes are pretty average, the AU2/3 brakes are significantly better.. but still in the average range. The difference is that the AU2/3 can be upgraded about $1000 cheaper than the AU1.

Actually, I just found a place where upgrading the brakes on an AU1 is CHEAPER than upgrading on an AU2.

Let me define each first:

AU1 standard upgrade = DBA slotteds all round, plus Bendix Advance pads. Discs = $125 each, plus $100 front pads, $70 rears. Total = $670.

AU2 standard upgrade = DBA slotteds all round, plus Bendix Advance Pads. Discs = $125 each, plus $150 front pads, $80 rears. Total = $730.

AU1 to AU2 upgrade = second hand AU2 to BF/Terry discs, callipers, pads, AU2/3 lower control arms, uprights, stub axles, sway bar and links $495, plus $80 freight = $575 total.

Now, the last one doesn't include slotted rotors because the upgrade from AU1 to AU2 brakes is actually better than the upgrade achieved from fitting slotted rotors to an AU1. So I haven't included these as the total effect of the upgrade is far superior to fitting them. Of course, if you go the extra expense of fitting slotted rotors etc, then just add the price for AU2 upgrade on top (but is unnecessary unless you want a track weapon).

So, at the right price, the AU1 to AU2 upgrade is actually more effective and cheaper than the usual AU1 DBA slotted upgrade.

Anyway - back to power. Each of the XR engines has the potential to achieve the same power with bolt on mods - it's all in the tuning. I said previously, the AU2/3 are tuned for PULP - do the same to an AU1, and you will achieve similar power gains.
