Default Buying a Typhoon interstate

Just bought a typhoon from SA! absolutely stoked!!! my dream car.

Anyway, I've never purchased a vehicle interstate before. I'm in Tas so will fly over to check her out and drive her back to Melb, put her on the spirit and bring her home.

If anyone out there has purchased interstate before (in particular, from SA) then I would be very interested in the process and any gems of wisdom.

how does the whole transfer procedure work?
what needs to be signed?
when do I pay stamp duty? on the spot in SA or when I register it in tas?
the car is financed - how would you guys go about making sure it is paid off? request the payout amount and do it yourself on the day?
etc etc etc

any info would be appreciated.

I will bring her home via great ocean road hopefully so I'll need to get hold of a car bra!

and don't worry, the ute is staying - giving it to the wifey....

have a look at tasmania's version of the rta nsw site - they tell you how to go about registering a car bought from interstate. i have just looked into a similar idea (buying from qld to rego in nsw)

yep I've checked all that out. I was more curious from the point of view that the car is encumbered and if I fly to SA on the day and buy it, what would be the best way of going about clearing the debt paid off it and evidence of it etc - basically, tips for how you go about it to protect your as best as possible.

btw, how can a car bra cause more damage than it protects against??

The guy i work with just sold his patrol.

The way they did it was the guy he bought the car wrote a cheque for the previous owner for what he owed, and another cheque to the owner for the difference.

The diffence was that they could go straight to where he had borrowed the $$ from as there up the road from work and hand it straight over. Get all paperwork signed and witnesed.

You should be right if you do something along those lines.

Find out who he has borrowed money from get in contact with them and say you wish to pay out the rest of his loan. Direct deposit may work better. But as long as you get intouch with his bank etc and ask them how they want it done.

Welcome to heaven, I just bought a Tornado and I've left very strict instructions with my family that I'm to be buried in it! So nice.

Last time i did it was a Saturday. Didn't see any police, but there were so so many campervans and buses. Most of them are fairly close to the speed limit though, and they are stopping fairly regularly at the lookouts, so if you have to get past one you get the opportunity.

Spot on. I used a genuine CarBra (not a cheaper imitation) on my AU 111 Ghia over three years and it never left a mark. I use one now on my BF 1 F6 and it hasn't left a mark in two years. Carefull cleaning after each use is the secret.

I got a custom car bra made for my AU. Perfect fit and it save my car from damage when I hit a few Gallah's on the way to Adelaide. My bar is Fibreglass and being a heavy item, i thought it would damage the bar. Only imgaine what bird damage would have done to the bar.

I'd make sure the loan is paid out by depositing the amount owing directly into the financial institution. Don't give it to the owner and trust him to do it. If he doesn't do it the loan then becomes your problem!

The last 3 cars i've bought have all been from interstate. (qld, nsw and vic). I just hand over the money like i would if they were local and sort all the rego and stuff out when i get it back to my state. I've found that in every instance S.A. rego people (regency) couldn't give a rats about roadworthy certificate's from other states, so they are basically worthless. not sure what tassie is like.

all the cars i've bought, i've driven home with no bonnet protection and haven't noticed any new chips from the journey although a car bra is cheaper than a respray. i did use one on one of my trips north and had no trouble whatsoever with marking. I did have overheating issues though as it was on a ef xr6 and seemed to hinder the airflow around the front, esp when airdam fills up with bugs!

Yep make sure the cheque is made out to whoever has the financial interest in the car, at least for the amount outstanding. Any difference can be done via another cheque or he can make arrangements with his financier about recouping it, most have credit accounts as well. ie one cheque to financial institution, outstanding loan amount goes to pay off debt, any excess goes to credit account.

Be sure to get a letter from the financial institution saying the finance has been lifted once done.

Is seller going to keep it registered for you to get back to TAS in it?
If not does TAS have a permit system like here in VIC?
Ask for finance company details from seller call them yourself and check what payout will be at time of pick up and get a bank chq made out or direct deposit amount to them & another for balance to seller. Hopefully finance company has a branch close by pick up point. Get an assurance from the finance company that if deal goes pear shaped that they will refund you
Have a letter written up that as from date & time (Of pick up) stating that you have purchased it and are responsible for it, get the seller & finance company to sign. Give them a copy
Dont forget to organise cover note from your chosen insurance company prior to picking vehicle up

Hope this helps and sale goes smoothly

I don't know it personally I have just been browsing on car sales for FPVs lately as the amount of money that I have spent on my current EL XR8 I could've bought one by now. That typhoon was my pick of the bunch, looks like an awesome car. Low kms and it has had a bit of work done, awesome at that price. I first saw it at work one day and even though my work mates are holden boys I didn't let them see incase I ended up trying to buy it.

This is the one that I am thinking of (hopefully you don't mind me putting it up), I am guessing it is the right one.

I've got her - she's mine. made it to melb in one piece. no kangaroos, wobmats - but a load of bugs - that car bra has paid for itself for sure!!

I can't believe the power these things are putting out. I can't wipe the smile off my face. Anyone out there thinking of getting one of these things and have been like me waiting waiting waiting etc - tyre kicking - just go out there and do it. This is the most satisfying money I've ever spent. You will not look back.

Pics on Sunday.
