Default Qld rego fee changes??

Hi,

Just got the rego renewal for my wife's Fairmont today.

"If paid on or before 13/03/2011 - $788.20
If paid after 13/03/2011 - $788.20"

My car is 4 cyl and I paid the rego a couple of weeks ago

"If paid on or before 27/01/2011 - $630.45
If paid after 27/01/2011 - $679.95"

Am I the victim of a typo or has our lovely Qld govt changed the rules on us in the last 2 weeks?

Checking last year's Fairmont rego I got about $50 off for paying on time too.

Anyone know anything about this?

MK

Absolutely a typo, those late fees are a bug cash cow for the people who can't afford to pay on the day because of the wrong pay day.

Nah, typo, like the telstra stuff up years ago the had the enquiries line start with 000 on the bill....

Not sure why you'd need an incentive to pay rego on time - not as if insurance would cover you having an accident in an unregistered vehicle.

100% correct Pete.

Years ago, it used to be an incentive to pay and you had upto 2 -3 weeks to pay after the due date. ie due date may have been the 5th of the month but you had until the end of the month to pay.

Now, if you don't pay by the due date, your is deemed unregistered if you do not pay by the date. Trust me, I got booked 2 years ago by having my rego go over by 3 days. It was like a $260 fine from memory.

Hope it's a typo for your sake.
But you never know with Capt. Bligh.
As she's spent all the money, it could be a "temporary" cyclone penalty.

Temporary penalty?
Umm he is referring to the fact that one of his rego renewals doesnt have the usual late penalties... The late fee has been on QLD rego for at least 6yrs now.

WOW QLD sucks. No late fee's in Vic, just means you can not drive your car if you do not pay rego.

Cool

I was late in paying my rego a few years back
and when I went into the office to pay it
I was told I was late and it would cost me an extra $40
I said no way as today is the fifth and it was due
on the fourth which was a Sunday
and I told them you werent open on Sunday
and was told tough titties
as it had to be paid on or before the due date
any way about a month later I got a cheque for $40
no explanation just a $40 cheque
later I read in the paper that if the QLD transport was
closed on the day the rego was due
you could pay it on the next business day
with out a penalty
so I cant see them knocking off the penalty
thanks John

It is not all doom and gloom in Qld, plenty of worse places to live! Just give Queensland Transport a call and sort it out, it probably is a typo in which case you may end up saving a few bucks for the price of a phone call.

No late fee in SA.

But if you want to let your car sit unregistered for a while, they'll slug you extra to move the expiry date. For example, if it expires 5th January, and you re-register it on the 20th March, expiry will still be 5th April unless you pay the extra to move it to 3 months from the renewal date.

True however the fine is much steeper if you are caught driving without payed rego. roughly around $500

Same here, both mine and the missus regos are due within a week of each other. Same figure if paid late.

Probably a typo, but may also be a Qld Government gesture for flood/cyclone victims who are struggling financially to pay their bills on time?

Definately not an incentive to pay on time
Its purely a money grabbing exercise for late payments

Same as 6 month rego isnt exactly half of 12 month rego
Skim a bit extra for that as well

Has anyone called Qld Transport? Could be a glitch in their systems...

It certainly is a late fee. If your car isn't paid fir it's rego by midnight of the due date, that's it. You are bit legally permitted to be on the road. Full stop.

It is a late fee. Same as a telephone bill, credit card payment, furniture & electrical rental payment. What it is, is a fee to make sure you pay on time, so that way the government gas a way of knowing that they will recieve that income by it's due date, & know they will have "this" amount of income from "that" amount of vehicles, minus average number of cancellations, plus average number of new registrations, every month/quarter/financial year to forecast income & expenditure. It just helps secure an income within a certain time.

Maybe they are foregoing the late fees as a good faith guesture in light of the floods. Alot of people saved cars, using them to get to higher ground, but everything else hs had to be replaced. And that money is tight, so it would be a struggle to pay late, let alone in time. I'd say that the government is being uncharacteristicly generous.

How can it be an "incentive to pay on time" when your rego runs out at midnight? If it's not in time, or early, it's late. I think that's how the conventional calibration if time works. Or I could be mistaken...

It all depends what sort of car you have.

It's a different story with a DeLorean...
