Default Ford,Holden,Toyota ONLY

IF we had a choice to buy these 3 ONLY , no other players and your non 3 as a trade on them wasn't accepted either ,in an effort to go all aussie
Would that effect your decision, would you drive your non 3 into the ground, rather than upgrade in 3 or 5 years ???

IF the decision was made , right now as of tomorrow no more imports at all
What is here is it , no more

Would that make a big difference to the aussie 3 makers,or would it take 5,10 years or longer to see the effects,or hardly worthy of a mention ....

Considering that those three manufacturers only make passenger cars here (Commodore/Cruze, Camry/Aurion, Falcon/Territory), then I think there would be a massive problem with your scenario.

What if I want a 4X4 ute?

It would certainly improve the second hand car market, that's for sure.

What is a falcon or commodore ute, or commodore wagons???

90% of people have no need for a 4wd at all anyway, kind of like Chev badges on commodores

We have imports? if the question is would it bother me, it would not bother me in the least, if it happened i reckon the local car makers would feel better immediately about investing billions here, probably take a couple of years for them to see any corporate bank balance improvement.

How's your brand new locally made vehicle going?
One that you have bought within the last year (with proof of purchase)?

Commodore and Falcon utes can carry no more than three people, and I suspect most would be loathe to have a baby capsule in the passenger seat, but maybe happy to leave the wife at home.

Who are you to tell people what they do or do not 'need'?

On the Princes Hwy through to Gippsland on any Friday night every second car is a lifted Patrol or 'Cruiser with muddies on. They don't need to go bush on the weekend, but it's their choice to do so, as it should be. Maybe they could stay home, watch the footy and drink beer instead. Reckon they would hit Billy Goat Bluff in a Commodore wagon?

Good on you, you purchased a new aussie car, thats kool. But cut it with giving others curry for what they purchase.

Sorry mate but my FG ute did not quite fit the scene for me so I upgraded to Ranger, btw more & more people are favouring these vehicles every day & my eyes do not tell lies......I see them every where.

Even the old farmer has turned away from the traditional ute.

I have purchased both import and local cars previously. And you know what I would have no problem with doing so again. Simple fact is that as much as I love the local product it didnt fit with what I was after. I have read over and over the carry on about who purchased what and the fact this means that don't support our local product or are simply un-australian because of their choice.

Until Ford/holden/toyota make a product that a is the right size for both myself and my partner or b makes one that she actually wants to drive/own then I will continue to buy imports. And no body should be judged negatively for making a choice that fits them.

Having said this if I had the choice of only the 3 I would be an owner of an ecoboost g6e or a gt. And I would buck the trend and run both my trade in and the new car into the ground. I wouldnt be looking at making a buck but enjoying it until it was all broke through enjoyment.

that is a fair call and the people who need these cars should be able to have access to them, but still I know plenty of people who have a dual cab ute for no reason at all besides the that they are cool at the moment

Falcons come in 1 tonne pay load , just as a full chassis ute .....
Some full chassis utes are only around 650 KG which is XR6 payload

The payload difference is only two components.

Tyre/wheel load ratings
Rear spring leaf ratings.

Thats why the 1 tonne utes never have the fancy rims and low profile tyres.

Not just farmers.. How about most of the construction/earthworks companies..
I use full 4x4 at least 3 to 4 full days a week.
It is pretty much constantly on during winter when on site..

I believe that mining/construction make up the majority % of 4x4 ute sales..

I guess I depends where you live. Up here you get both now there are some mines opening up. A lot of the bigger property owners/farmer types have lux's plus a BMW or merc as their "town" car...

Don't mind some of these land cruiser v8s... same price as a GT though lol

Even if you don't use 4 wheel drive everyday it still comes in handy having it for those occasions where you do go out camping or 4 wheel driving. Same thing with having a ute, you may not use the tray everyday, but they come in ******* handy when you need one. People can buy whatever they want.

As for the original topic, if it ever came to that closing the borders type of situation I'd probably leave, you cant force people into something and you look across the board, across all products, look in your house now what does Australia actually make? Bugger all, 99% of good electronics are foreign, most innovations are done by the Germans or Japanese. Holden goes on about all its fancy new specs with every new release, but most of the time they are just things the Japanese car makers were doing decades ago.

It would depend on what they offer compared to what I currently own.

I personally would prefer to own as new or close to as possible. But at the end of the day if it does not offer what I need or even want I won't buy it.

All things being equal or very comparable I would buy Aussie however.

I literally did that this week. As good as the Falcon ute is, it doesn't fit everyone's lifestyle. Trading the turbo for a Ranger was like a death in the family, but I don't regret it. Even though I don't think I'll ever buy another Falcon, They are a wonderful car. If Ford wanted to stay in Australia, they could have built the Ranger 3 years ago. Then we wouldn't of had supply issues and factories wouldn't of needed to close.

20 years ago a family had no choice-got kids, need a large car, need to tow, large car, work vehicle? large car, white in colour, automatic thanks.
The alternatives were ordinary-
a high riding 4wd wagon was an agricultural machine
small/medium cars were often poorly built and equipped
utes? forget it, these have only just caught up in the last 5 years
Over that time ALL categories of cars have improved out of sight when it comes to safety, quality and reliability, we have it too good with all these choices.
The average family no longer needs a locally built large car to "tow the boat" as one of the vehicles in their driveway will now be an imported twin cab 4x4 or a crossover wagon.

To get back to the OP:
So you’re suggesting a ban on imported passenger vehicles, effective immediately? Not sure that a total ban is the way to go, but to answer your question, the impact would be huge.
Not sure whether it would save the Falcon, but Ford would be scrambling to get Focus production here, and either a “new” Falcon or the Mondeo. Toyota would bring back the Corolla, Holden would be laughing all the way to the bank, and companies like Mazda and Nissan would be busting a hump to get a slice of local production.
