I've been given a Daewoo Lanos loan car while the GT is in for smash repairs.

It's done 200,000 k's and doesn't t have a sqeak or rattle anywhere! It's got a decent gearbox, is revvy and fun to drive.

The worst thing about driving it is this disguise I'm forced to wear!

Still, I don't think I'll be trading the GT on one anytime soon.

The good news is that the smash repair place recognised that the bumper they supplied before was dodgy and they are replacing it with a new one. Yay!

My missus bought hers new before I met her
Things fairly reliable but that's about it.

All the heater demister controls are now held together with zip ties as the plastic is really nasty. None of the vents work
You'd swear it was an old Holden with the amount of rust in it and the paint is falling off quicker than the interior trim.
Rubbers around the back window have shrunk that much they have come off.

This time last year the immobiliser dongle shat itself. Holden dealer told us $80. Then charged her $230.
2 weeks ago the immobiliser system died. So it went on the back of a tilt tray to the Holden dealer again. Cost to repair was more than the car is worth. So the immobiliser system has been permanently bypassed. With any luck some on might steal it now.

In general. Reliable but very poor quality and poorly put together

Funny when the RACQ tilt tray driver says he's always coming in here(Holden dealership) with Cruzes and Craptivas on the back

Hmm sounds a lot like that portable Akai made in china cassette Walkman I had since 1996 and dismantled about 10 times over the years ( the crooked components and poorly done solder joints that remained functional always amazed me ) that still works to this day.

Easiest car to service. Oil filter sparkplugs ect so easily accessible. 1.5ltr engines not bad. Can not go faster than 170km/hr. Valve stem seals and timing belts known weak links. I owned one for 2 years, cheap to run. Not so good for your image. Big biker guy got in argument with me because it was a girly car. Traded shortly after.

I remember a friend of mine's family bought a Lanos when it first came out and then promptly sold it when they learned it had the lowest safety rating in a passenger car at the time.

My mate bought one new,turns out one of the pistons was undersized.
One of about a hundred issues he had with it,ended up calling it the lemonos!

Quite right.
Here are the results of crash safety for the 2001 Lanos, As opposed to the Falcon of the same era.

Yes they also had timing belts with interference motors - ie snap a belt, bend the valves.

You must have got the only good one ever made.
My old Mum bought a Lanos new in 2001, when she sold it in 2008 with only 27,000 km on the clock the exhaust had already been replaced, it drove like drunken sailor, the aircon no longer worked and would have costed more than $1000 to fix, bits were falling of the interior, and it was embarrassing to be seen in it.

I just this minute gave it back. And got my GT back. All fixed.

What was wrong with the original bumper ? Why was it dodgy, was it not an original FPV unit ?

As for the Lanus , guy at work had one. Pretty rugged drivetrain , car was falling apart around the engine and gearbox.

It was original. It was twisted across the bottom edge of the grille opening. They ordered another one, same problem. They contacted Ford, who sent one from the east (I'm in Perth) and that was straight.

They painted it and fitted it this week.

All cudos is to Belair Smash repairs. They were polite and professional, gave me a loan car and sorted out the problem without fuss. It took time, yes. But they were not to blame. And they fixed a scratch on the back of the car for free to make up for the inconvenience. Overall, despite teething troubles, I am happy now.

My daughter had one which i borrowed for a week thrashed the **** of it handled like a go kart fun to drive but you could tell it was going to just fall apart one day. she paid $400.00 for it with a broken timing belt I replaced belt and she kept it for two years. Traded it on a fiesta got double what she paid for it. WIN.
