Default The pulsar SSS is back!!! Memories...

We are remember in the 90s when everyone in a pulsar SSS wanted to run everyone.

If you had a falcon or commodore 6 you had to open them up to keep those big talking pulsar SSS drivers at bay.

But they were a fair car which punched above their weight.

With the re introduction of the pulsar SSS are we going to see those big talking guys back out of the woods, ready to go again? Or have times changed and the pulsar SSS appeal to a new audience.

Apparently it's turbo charged this time too, presents some potential.

For the modest money they seem like a reasonably useful bit of kit that's sure to appeal to young people on a budget looking for something with a reasonable amount of poke. They'll also appeal to the ricer brigade in due course who will want to pick them up in three years for a mere fraction of their original price, they'll then tune them add big wings and other gawdy trim and try and tell everyone that they'll blow away a Ferrari. Funny how history has a habit of repeating itself...

Only problem I see with them is being a turbo makes them no go for P platers in most states. Great car, but this bit of legislation will go against their re-sale and potential "cultish" status. SR20 in it's day was one if not the best 2.0 engines around.

They should shoehorn a VR38DETT under the hood and AWD like a nissan duke R. That would be my type of Pulsar SSS

On that note on January 1st 2014 NSW are changing the laws to 130kw per ton so this car in January will be fine for p-plates to drive.

A mere shadow of the previous SSS, although it has reasonable power it's apparently a bit of a soft drive. The suspension is barely changed from the shopping trolley versions and isn't what you would call sporty, not like the previous one was.

a comeback of the ET pulsar of the 80's maybe?

The concept is great, but I dislike the body shape. It looks skinny from the front and a bit rear heavy at the rear resembling a suzuki swift.

Did Nissan do this to revive a once icon or compete with the likes of Mazda MPS's, VW Golf GTI's, Subaru wrx hatch and the like?

It's not a hot hatch competitor, just a warm one. It's like Ford offering the 1.6 Ecoboost in a Focus Sport in Europe, to sit below the ST.

Don't know why Ford haven't bought the 1.6 Ecoboost Focus here yet.

Under done in my opinion. N15 SSS were nice cars. I knew a bloke who put a GTiR engine in his and it flew but I doubt many would bother with these cars. Just doesn't have that appeal.

N15 SSS was ahead of the market at the time IMO. Such a great car with looks , features and god damn the SR20DE is a tough engine! I've owned 5 pulsars in my time and gotta say I would own a N15 SSS again in a heartbeat

It's prob more a competitor to the Holden cruze turbo? Very mild??

Seems not in the spirit of the SSS namesake? Probably cheaper than the original SSS too.

There was nothing red hot about the SR20DE SSS Pulsars back in the day.

Sure they were a better drive than the other shopping trolleys of the day and the SR20 was a nice motor, but at heart they were still a 103kw hatchback.

The new one is packing a Direct Injected 141kw 1.6 turbo with a six speed manual or cvt. It definately seems as though it has picked up where the old one left off, as a well equipped and well performing car for its day.

I applaud Nissan for bringing back the SSS, equipping it appropriately and mostly for keeping it affordable.

It also only weighed 1100 kg and it's twin cam revved to almost 8000. They were fun and did punch above their weight.

If only modern cars had the souls that the cars of the 90s had

Agree, they had character that's for sure.
Bought one brand new in the day, was the first new car we ever bought too.

The missus is looking at replacing her EK Civic VTiR (40 billion km) and we test drove one of these new SSS'es a few weekends ago. It is a massive exercise in banality, a washing machine where you can barely hear a hairdryer in the distance is the best way to describe it.

Looks are subjective, we're all entitled to our opinion. To me, it looks inoffensive (conservative/boring, I wouldn't call it "gay"), wheels are nice. Be curious to know what the modification potential is for it. Up the boost, modify the suspension, can make a nice little cult car for P platers in a few years time (especially if they are becoming legal for P platers).

I can see them having a Nismo sticker plastered across the windscreen, BOV, 5" exhaust tip blowing grey smoke with Macca's trays under the back tyres. Then you know it's a good car!

---Renault Corolla---

I saw the photo and thought Suzuki-Toyota.

N14 pulsar was the big leap after the holden improved N13.

N14 SR20 was a good to drive car--and a great used car. but the drama when it was new and facing HAPPY owners in the workshop driveway.....

N15 was when the brand heading south-and stuck in a commercial 1800,economy motor.

N16-.

^^ What does Renault have to do with it? This looks nothing like the Clio or Megane.

Nissan ruined the Pulsar by forcing the Tiida on us. Now no one even looks at the pulsar. What a terrible mistake by removing a nameplate, introducing a crap car and then bringing back the old name was. Pulsar is irrelevant now.

Ugly car, does nothing for the senses. Big and boring looking, like a 35YO woman's car to drive off to her job as a PA. Guys won't fall for this as a hot hatch. Because it isn't. I mean, look at it!
