Buying Damaged cars

I'm just curious to know what sort of price you would expect to pay for a write off/stat write off BA, especially fairmonts,ghia etc.

Any experiences would would be nice.

very, very little, obviously depending on how much they're written off.
Head on off to the auctions one day for a bit of amusement
I wouldn't expect any write off damaged BA to go for much more than a few grand.

How long is a piece of string??
The condition of the vehicle, klms, where the damage is, MKI or MKII will make a difference. Browsing auction sites will give you the best idea of prices for these things.

i ask as i am usually working at the time of my local auctions so i havent seen BA's go under the hammer. I have seen a Chevy suburban go for $8500 and a few $500 bombs but im never able to be there at the right time to see a BA.

cheers all might have to pull a sickie and watch an auction.

I believe you can purchase a selling guide etc which details the avg sale price over the last 3 months for all there vehicles they sold I know Manheim Fowles do that

2005 BAII Fairmont 6cyl 83000kms hit in the middle repairable write off $3600

2003 BA Fairmont 6cyl dual fuel 64000kms not on WOVR but had previous repair $8200

Do you have easy access to a computer at work? If you do, you can register with Pickles Online and watch the auctions live on the net.

A family member has a yard on Sydney Rd and he buys repairable write-offs quite often. You need to know what you are doing (he is a panel beater/painter from days of old and phones me for expected costs of BA-BF parts when he is at the Auction.

He picked up a black TE50 not long ago for $3800 and after full repairs it owes him around $7500 - $8000 (which includes the purchase price, Vic Roads etc). Phoned me about a blood orange GT-P that had quite a few mods and after I did a quick calculation I told him not to pay more than $11000 for it and it went for $12500. He sat down afterwards and checked my figures and I was bang on.

Parts are the killer, so know what they are worth, know the wholesale value of the same car in great order and do the math. I always factor in an amount of money to compensate that it is and always will be a "Repaired Write-Off". This stays on the cars papers for ever and they are hard to sell later on when you want another car. These cars cannot be Financed and some Insurance Companies will not Insure them either.

I'd be buying something like a fairmont BA for the interior/driveline for an older model falcon, ED EB whatever. You can choose to buy something like this for a project that needs donor parts, or, as GTGTP said, to repair and resale for profit. The second of which can be difficult.

Also, you might consider sending a cluey individual to the auctions for you, then corespond via phone on a likely car. Stress, underline, highlight, the word cluey. Make sure they know what you're doing. My dad picked up his mondeo doing this-and saved a fortune.

Have bought a few, prices vary, sometimes people want them, sometimes not

Paid $6000 for front damaged BA, was only 6 months old back then

Paid $1750 for a BAII rollover, drunk driver so insurance took what they could

Paid $8900 for a 2007 BFII XR6, front damage, grill lights, bumper, radiator
fixed and re registered this one, cost about $15000 all up, worth $25000 easy now

Average price I hear is around $4000, wrecking for parts, more like $6000 if they can be fixed and registered.

thanks guys, most helpfull. I'm tossing up buying a donor car so i can do a dual zone conversion, leather seats etc in my BA futura and if i could get one for 3-4k it would be worth it.

my only experience at the damaged auctions

was for a mk2 ba ute
xr6turbo
6 speed manual (now we see why i was there)
fully optioned interior (nice little bonus)
only damage was the front was stuffed but all mounts and engine was fine. intercooler was fine as was radiator. a few scuffs on the tray. missing side skirts

was in feb this year and it went for about 7 from memory

i only put aside 6 grand for it :(
mind u if i bid higher im sure it would have driven it to 8 or 9 easily as the other bidders were quite interested in it
