The origin of the name GT with regard to motor vehicles dates back to the 1920s and LeMans.
After winning the right to disallow of use of Champaign, Burgandy etc. as a name on wine that was not actually produced in the appropriate French provinces there has been another attack by our EU buddies. The name GT and derivatives have been found to be a "traditional Trade Mark" of LeMans and as such can no longer be used on motor vehicles that have not raced there. Australia has signed a treaty with EU and therefore must comply with the ruling. This basically means that there can be no more FPV GTs (or HSV GTSs) unless FPV actually race a FPV GT at LeMans. So what to do? Setting up a race program for LeMans will cost $100,000,000 as they require a 10 year commitment which will hurt FPV severely and require the price of GTs to be increased by $30,000 to cover it. Declaring war on France is a problem as when we send the Broken Hill Army Reserve platoon armed with a shanghai and a big stick over and defeat them over a weekend we will then be responsible for running the country (although we could send over a caretaker government made up of 3 independents and a green). FPV are considering renaming their V8 product line but although they have had a tiny bit of push back from "certain minority groups" have asked me to run a poll in the nexus of all blue ovality....AFF |

So WTF happens to all the cars around the world that have never raced at that French sh!thole? Do the owners have to remove the badges?
Someone put a call through to Uncle Sam and find out if they have a bomber available this weekend for a drop over France - one good one like Hiroshima should do the job nicely - it's not like the rest of the world would miss them. |

ESP for me.
GT has matured from yesteryear into a Grand Tourer. It isn't meant to be a track pony, or a drag strip whore. It is a car that is designed to drive well on the road, and if the owner wants to take it on a track, then it won't perform badly, but its home is the road. ESP for me is probably the most desirable of the 80's Fords. The last of the V8s, the last of the fast Falcons without Fuel Injection, and probably the best looking of the XD/XE Falcons. Like GT, it was also based on the Fairmont. These days, that is debatable, however. Just to throw another spanner in the works, GXL was the continuation of GT without the GT moniker. I'd be voting that way if it was an option.

Does Ford race the "GT" supercar or Mustang GT at LeMans. Will Ford be able to claim linage between the cars that race there and cars on sale to the public.
God I hate intellectual property law.

There is no poll option to declare war on France...
How about we just call it the GT and tell the french lawyers to **** off and eat some cheese.

An Italian phrase/acronym is a "traditional trade mark" of the French. Merde to that..what is today, April 1st?
With Ford having raced and won with the GT 40, surely this will suffice for we poor colonists to keep using part of that moniker.

Flappist old bean, you ARE having a quiet afternoon...I am confused, disclaimer and all. Think I need 8 rum and cokes and a little lie down.
What's on the grille of every FPV? I can hear the flamethrower igniting from here...

Could we argue that the FPV GT has some DNA link to the GT40 which has links to the Ford GT and as such......
So, are we being told that ANY badge carrying the initials GT is now outlawed - GTS, GTO, GTR - unless it has raced at LeMans for 10yrs? I opened this thread thinking that it was a Friday afternoon joke. What next - they are going to raid my yard and take my GoaT because it hasn't run at LeMans, or do I have to rename it? My elderly grandparents have an old Victa lawnmower with GTS badges on it becuase this model was Guaranteed To Start - do I have to consult my legal consel to proactively protect my grandparents from a knock on the door fromt he fun police asking them to cease and desist the use of this mower, lest it be determined that they are otherwise basking in unearned LeMans glory every time they trundle around maintaining the lawns of their villa? What a crock. Gave me a chuckle though!

Hypothetically speaking, FPV could do one of two things to overcome this very sticky French problem:
a) Delete GT badge and replace with Tickford moniker & wings b) Replace with a pretty gold "bow tie" badge and await for WW3 to erupt |

How about calling it G*T (insert any letter you like for the *)
Then when you register the new trademark design, just make the middle letter so small in the design you need a magnifying glass to see it. Then its not technically a GT, but thats how all bagdes etc will read. Edit: We'll need a new numbering system soon too, BMW will ban use of the numbers 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8

Since Micro$oft try to patent the 386 and 486 processor to stop "others" from selling their processors with the same name, MS was told that you cannot patent a number...
I doubt also that you can patent a few letters which could stand for anything... Unless of course the french can prove that they were the first to use the letter T after G before anyone else! FWIW ... that's why the next MS processor was not the 586, but the pentium, to try to alleviate this copyright issue from all the copycat manufacturers ...
