I remember an incident from a number of years ago. Was walking through a car park when I noticed a car backing out of a parking spot with another car parked directly opposite. The person was having difficulty judging how much distance was behind their car and was inching back extremely slowly. So I thought I'd do the right thing as I was behind them and signal how much room they had. My intention was to wave them back until they were close enough and stop them once they go close to the other car. But so soon as I started waving my hand, the driver thought I was telling her she was clear and gave it a good dose of right foot. CRUNCH. The elderly couple got out of the car sand started abusing me. I stood there dumbfounded for a minute or so then walked away.

Dont feel bad, its their fault for not having the common sense to determine what universal hand signals mean :\

I saw teh same thing. Except the person in the vehicle understood what was going on and obey the hand signals properly.

That's why I rarely rely on peoples hand signals as a gesture for me to pull out in traffic.
They may just been swatting at a fly in the car, and crunch for me when I pull out. |

If im walking through a car park and see someone making life hard for themselves I help them. Habit I guess from backing trucks into a warehouse in a previous job. Although hand signals are universal.
I have been the victim of this though. In my ranger I delivered a big tv and some other junk to a guy in the city. He lived in an apartment building and the carpark was underground. I get in and he tells me to back up to the elevator as he does not want to have to help me carry the stuff far. All good no worries I have a look and notice I can get nearly all the way back to the elevator but there is a column that he will have back me up to as its not in either mirror and the rear window is blocked with his crap. So im backing up and he is waving me, and waving me, and waving me and crunch. The **** jockey just kept going. I jumped out ready to belt him and asked him what he was bloody up to and his response was "I though you could see". So why were you giving me hand signals you bloody **** burgerler. Luckily the damage to the tray was superficial and was just a bent tray side pin. Never again, i dont care if i have to get out and look 15 times, if i cant see then im not going to wing it or rely on somebody else.

A tree was across Castle Hill Rd today..[Cherrybrook]
I put out some witches hats both sides on 4 lane rd.. Pulled the main trunk of the tree into the curb... Traffic was fine in all lanes but one with witches hats around tree in curb.. Two things I did wrong!! Didn't fill out a Hazard assessment check [HACS] The other end of tree had damaged a shed when it fell down.. The owner is up set I did extra damage to shed... It was VERY dangerous to be left on road till RTA / police etc got there.. Ahh I've got big shoulders...Funny thing I was asked if I had RTA / Work cover traffic control cert... YES I have so it could have been 3 things wrong... Looks like the owner of the trees and shed is going to ask for new garden shed...

To add to the thread. A few weeks ago I parked behind an old lady (in a shopping centre car park) who was trying to get her car equally between the lines. She would have been 80 plus at least. She went backwards and forwards several times, but didn't actually gain anything from that. She turned the wheels in the incorrect angle and just kept ending up skew-if. To me it was so bleeding obvious, but to her she had no understanding of what angles the wheels were at. I got out and signalled her to wind down her window and offered to guide her. All she needed to do was hold the wheel hard right and reverse 1m and presto. She replied "You are just worried about me hitting your fancy car aren't you" in a not so friendly tone. I told her to bugger my car, hold the wheel more to the right and reverse. After a metre she stopped and it was done....... She still questioned me, saying that it didn't 'seem' straight.. (it was 100% smack bang in the middle of the spot dead straight).... Why do you bother sometimes??? Another friend parked on the street and nicked / scraped the bumper of the car in front. It was a 90's car that didn't look all that well kept. She left a very apologetic note offering to repair the bumper (she has a panel beater in the family) and she got a call full of abuse. The other party DEMANDED to go through insurance, DEMANDED to use her own repairer and said the repair was over a thousand dollars as the whole back needed to be blended. She probably did a dodgy on the quote assuming my friends offer was an admission of no insurance to get cash for a repair that would never be carried out. She wondered why she bothered as well........ Last edited by Yellow_Festiva; 18-11-2010 at 10:02 AM. |
