Default Engine changeover from 5 litre to 5.8 litre?

I need some help as I am trying to surprise my man by getting him things for his car, he has a 1995 EF XR8, 5 litre engine & would love nothing more than to be able to drop a 5.8 into her but is not sure if it would just bolt straight onto his existing EFI setup, please help me, I'm just trying to be a good Mrs!

Where's the 5.8 coming from?

Chances are no it won't just bolt up and plug in and work. It would require a lot of work and then because (as far as I'm aware) the EF didn't come with any models offering a 5.8L, it would likely need to be engineered before it could be legally driven.

Simple answer is No.

I guess you meen a 351C?
I have seen 351W fitted but it's easier to stroke your 302 to 347.

Check out build threads of various e series cars, a couple are V8.

Mine I have stroked from 302 to 347.

A factory 5.8L Windsor block can be sourced, but they are hard to come by. The easiest methods would be to, as said, put a stroker kit in. But if you do that youd want a stronger block than the 5L in it. So an aftermarket block would be the way to go. Either way, its not a cheap venture.

Bugger..... So its not going to be an easy job? He did want to put a Windsor into it. I might have to stick to the other ideas you guys have given me about the stroker kit. I wouldn't have thought of that on my own, thanks guys!

If it is an EF XR8 it is already a Windsor engine.

May I suggest you consider a supercharger kit - comes with everything you need and would make a great present. Matter of fact if he doesnt appreciate it (and you for giving it to him) I'll send you my address.

Something like this would be ideal:

http://www.raptorsc.com.au/kits.php?id=46

Cheaper than a stroker, less hassle to put together and if he doesnt like it or wants to sell the car down the track you can always unbolt it and sell it seperately.

Agree with b2tf.

Having said that, get a pro to fit it as well. Drive in, drive out all done and dusted.

All the 5.0 EFI fits.. It has F series inlet ??
An aftermarket inlet is cheaper, use the lowest as bonnet clearance is tight ...
The heads injectors etc are same is 5.0
engine.. The F series EFI runs MAP ..
But can easily be converted..Here's an XE conversion..
http://www.fordmods.com/ford-v8-f2/3...ute-t9411.html
The front accessories brackets fit and sit alittle
wider than 5.0 engine..Longer serpentine belt..
The 351 block is much stronger ..
An aftermarket sump will be required if it has rear pan..

First issue - too tall for the EF/EL engine bay. TerroristGHIA on fordmods has recently completed the 351W into a EF fairmont...
http://www.fordmods.com/the-garage-f...65071-400.html

This page has pics of how far the motor hangs out of the bonnet. Keep in mind that the fairmont has a taller bonnet than the XR8 would, due to design..

A lot of the fittings have had to be customised (and the extractors also had to be built to match the application).

He has it in and running, he is currently getting the conversion engineered

Thanks but a super charger is going to cost us too much, do you think he would mind me doing this sort of thing for him behind his back? Got any other ideas for me?

I think going from a 5 to a 5.8 would cost much more to be honest.

I may be totally out of the loop because I have no idea how much this sort of thing would set me back, I was only hoping to spend $2,500 - $3,500 max, I'm not going to be able to do much for him for that sort of money am I?

A turbo / supercharger conversion or the engine swap you wanted could not be had for that coin.

You can do some smaller bolt on mods such as intake, exhaust and tune for that money and get decent gains.

Help me again, what can I get done to the intake system? I need to sound like I know what I'm talking about, because most mechanics see a chic coming & the price instantly doubles unless I have the knowledge to put them back in their place!

If this is meant to be a surprise I also factored in fitting. A turbo will also require extra work in other areas (stopping, tune ect) I'm assuming if done properly???

I think you might win wife of the year;)

Do you know the workshop that has done work previously on this car? You could always go to them and let them help you plan his surprise. I can't imagine they would rip you off if you tell them it's a present for your husband.

You could always look at a suspension upgrade instead of engine mods.

Thats sweet about wife of the year, thanks heaps!
He got all the work done through mates of mates, what do you guys think of just getting the car converted to gas, getting him a mild cam & larger throttle body to suit the gas system? Would guys be happy with that?

With your budget i would do a inlet manifold, throttlebody and MAF upgrade, all this from a AU3 XR8 2nd hand can be brought for around $1000 off Ebay. Extractors and exhaust can be brought for $1500 fitted. All this stuff would be able to be used in the future should he want to stroke it or supercharge it. Allow $1000 to fit the manifold and tune after its all fitted. You would get heaps of power gain for $3500. To do bigger upgrades will cost $5000 and up as it needs so many extra's to fix the Standard EF XR8's poor exhaust and manifold. Even if you did a set of heads for $2500 you would still need all of the stuff i recommended on top. The exhaust and inlet manifold are the weakest link on the E series XR8 so start there. Just make up a gift voucher on your computer that gives him $3500 to spend on what ever he likes and put on it that you think he should do the above mentioned mods. That way he can shop around for parts on the forums here and Ebay to get the cheapest parts than pay a good workshop to fit and tune it, Hope the other guys on here think this is OK and hope this helps you, Shane

Gas?
Either GRA or gas injection.
Any other will make the previous mods a waste.

^^^^^ I think you are being sexist mate, Mel definitely sounds like a true car enthusiast lady, not some stereotype housewife...

Hey Mel, I do have a 5L supercharger system I am removing off my Sprint motor soon that is within your budget and will fit onto your hubby's motor.

PM me if you are interested. But no matter what which way you go, I would love to have an understanding car mad missus like you
