Hi guys
I know this is going to sound like a stupid question and maybe it is but anyway . Just wanting to know if when painting your car it is ok to do say a panel each weekend or something like that as time and experience are against me and the idea of painting a whole car in one hit is daunting to say the least but i am keen to have a go but would like to take my time and go slow . once you finish laughing any advice would be appreciated . thanks Trev. |

As a mechanic I'm not overly qualified to answer, but to get colours right it's better to shoot it in one hit, also it will Actualy be a lot less work to do as one job, masking up alone is a killer of a job

If you have a solid colour then you could, metallic no way.
A lot of people will split the job up Engine bay Boot Door jambs Under the bonnet, boot lid, inside doors Then outside. The problem with 1 panel at a time is wastage of paint and cleanup.

better to do it in one hit, i sprayed my car not long ago and i had never touched a spray gun before i was freaked out but come up really well. make sure your first job is a a solid colour.

One hit. Make sure all your panels are on too. Done ours with the front guards on a bench and then immediately done the rest of the car and still sometimes you can tell a slight miss match. Get it all together and blast away.

Seeing as time is an issue you are probably best of doing all the door jams, under boot & bonnet etc in your own time but I would leave the exterior and do that all in one hit....
Best option buy, borrow a cheap car you can drive around while you have yours in the shed. I did a full colour change and respray on my old AU in 6 days and I worked like a dog doing it (8am to midnight each day)... I did that one in a solid colour and was pretty straight forward. My Ba I did in 9 days as I was a bit slack but also required more work and painted in a metallic pearl.. While it turned out OK, I am not overall happy with it so I will be painting it again soon after I paint the lads car. We are lucky as we still have his old car we can drive while his then mine will be off the road...

Nothing is a stupid question, that's why we have these forums..... your thread could help another in the future... like us. We are about to paint our XB Wagon/hearse and it is going to be done over a weekend in a borrowed spray booth so will keep you informed eeek - we are even doing black outs... could be interesting

thanks guys for all the advice the car is a project car so there is no limit to how long it takes its more the spare time i don't seem to be able to find enough of so i thought bit by bit may have been the way to go by reading above i think i will do under the bonnet and the door jams first as its a panel van i may then do the interior in the back and leave all the outside for the one hit as you suggest how long can it remain in its undercoat before it needs to be painted could i undercoat it then leave it say a month before i top coat it if i don't have the time ?

if you are using primer filler or spray putty its best to leave for a week to shrink back other wise it will affect your end result. i have this problem with one of my doors its not that noticeable but i know its there. also would be best to paint with acrylic paint as its more forgiving and use a decent suction spray gun like the Star s-2000.

reminds me of the cab we had one time that had drips going up the door
used to tell the slow cabbies that we turned the car upside down to paint it

yeah i will be doing 2-pac paint next yr so i will use a gravity gun as well its just that the suction fed gun is better suited with acrylic. I didnt feel comfortable with the suction gun felt to bulky.
