I was scrolling through my new feed just before and came across this news clipping which describes the meaning of hooning http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/...psaf820f60.jpg
So apparently slowly cruising is hooning now?? |

Pathetic.
The Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland has lost it. Along with anyone else who shares their views. |

that doesnt suprise me. while i dont mind the police doing their job and i have no problem keeping a car on the legal side. it does get abit annoying when police target enthuists that are trying too raise money for charity or pulling every car over that was at a car show etc. car lovers in general arent hoons. i find its the people who dont give a stuff about there car that are usally the hoons!!! anycar can hoon not just the hotted up ones etc.

Funny I saw a bunch of cop cars slowly cruising around Mt Panorama before the start of the race with some other cars.
I suppose you could say the police were hooning around a public road for entertainment What a load of BS. For anyone wanting to send the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland some feedback on their definition of hooning I'm sure they would love to hear from you seeing as they have set up a feedback form http://www.carrsq.qut.edu.au/aboutus/feedback.jsp IMO I think Wikipedia has hit the nail on the head for a definition. Anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily or dangerously. |

Quite a few things they left of that list.
Having four people in the back seat. Talking on mobile phones whilst driving. Farting without first winding down a window, to name a few. |

My father used the word hoon a lot in my childhood. He grew up in the 60's and to him going for a hoon just means going for a general spirited drive in your car. Nothing more than that and totally innocent. Pity the government has made a word that was part of our culture into a dirty word

And people said, when Queensland talked proudly of it's new hoon legislation where for a first offence they take your car for three months, the second time within five years it's crushed, that "It'll only be for "serious" hoons like street racing and excessive speeding and dangerous driving...don't worry about being victimised as a hoon for doing something minor".
...Really....? "Cruising...where groups of vehicles slowly drive around an area to exhibit their vehicles"...explain that one... I don't care what people try and explain it away with...when push comes to shove, it is down to the policeman who pulls you over as to what "hooning" is defined as. If he thinks you've been hooning and need to be taught a lesson, you damn well will be. I realised it was like this after talking to many serving and ex-police officers who all say that when you are sitting there at a radar trap and catch someone, if they challenge it in court, the officer will say something along the lines of "I looked up and saw the vehicle approaching me at what I estimated to be X kilometers per hour, which I then confirmed with the speed gun". This cleverly means you are not questioning the accuracy of a piece of technology, you are questioning the judgement of a trained police officer, which a court will look dimly upon. In another thread about the new hoon laws up here, I said that police will pick on a vehicle. I gave the example of being here for four years and never having been pulled over, my son getting a ticket in my very visible bright red Celica, and then within the next several weeks I was pulled over three times for "random licence checks", or "random vehicle and rego checks", etc. It wasn't the driver they cared about...it was the car, and they couldn't care less who was driving it. It was a prime example of the old "There's a done up car...let's pull him over to see if we can catch him on anything" while ignoring the stuttering rustbuckets clattering around the streets... /rant... |

What a joke, casually cruising around to show off your car is now a hoon offence? What about all those charity cruises?
Maybe next revision for Victoria they can add in having an annoying 24/7 barking dog is now a hoon offence, as that rather annoys me at home with my neighbours. |

the only fair definition of hooning i can think of is driving in an unsafe manner with anti social behavior, but i suppose if they can describe every possible infraction you could ever make on the planet earth in a motor car , that makes it easier to fill the treasury when they can book you 10,000 different ways from midnight,
actually it`s a wonder they have`nt included having the radio up too loud as hooning. |

Just ignore it........ |

Mik, hate to burst your bubble but you can be done in NSW for "music too loud". Their reasoning? You cannot hear emergency vehicles sirens, horns etc. I know this "not hearing" does happen as I saw a woman turn right in front of an ambulance as she had not heard it. Big hit. I can only assume she was at least partly blind as the ambulance lights were flashing too.

My mate and I were "Cruising" to Harry's Diner one night and he got done for "excessively loud music"... just because he had his windows down and the cop could hear it... *sigh*
If you want to get an idea of the readership of said newspaper, have a look in the comments section of the articles... I swear to god my tax funds part of a centrelink check that goes towards a 'grass' fund, that in turn pays for an Internet connection thus enabling these 'shining beacons of society' to 'eloquently express' their 'well rounded' thoughts in an open forum. |

it's concerning that you could be charged with hooning for going to fast or going to slow. If you read the bit above the list, it says it's about holding up traffic. a couple bogans have been driving everywhere at 15kph, which is the new way to middle finger the authorities ("you can't charge us because we're not speeding" kind of thing). yes, a few bad eggs making it worse for the rest of normal society.

Officer: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Driver: I was doing 63 in a 60 zone... but it's only 3 k's over... not even 10% by the ADR allowance of speedo error... Officer: It doesn't matter - the limit is the limit - you are not allowed to go over - you can however drive slower then the posted speed limit Driver: So if I was diong 55kph that would be ok? Officer: No - I'd fine you for hooning Driver: WTF Officer: Attitude test failed... I noticed you also happen to have your radio on....
