Default Is a Mazda MX5 a girls car?

Hey all,

I've been asking a few people on what they think about the Mazda MX5.

Fantastic buying as a used vehicle for a while now.

You can't drive one and say thats a girls car....though on the surface it may seem that way. Too much fun!

Depends why you bought one.

The answer will dictate if you pee standing up or sitting down.

Don't know if its a girl s car or not, but I thought about getting one because its a cheap reliable run about with conventional layout which I like.

Looking at some of the price around ... it's a tempting buy.

Although ... first thing would be coilovers and swaybars on them ... lightweight rims and sticky tyres ... and if it can handle it ... a snail underbonnet.

I went out with a blonde who drove one - she looked great in it.

I drove it to the shops once, got laughed at and was asked what my husband drove. Would never drive it again.

I do believe the MX-5/Miata is rather feminine.

But I know an old grandfather who has always liked them and now owns one. So I wouldn't slam a male MX-5 owner for being homosexual.

Such a shame about the stereotype on them, they are a little ripper of a car. I personally dont think they are specifically a girls car, come decent rims, lowered, decent exhaust and a roll bar and they look tough, as well as leave a lot of cars for dead around a mountain road. Shame most people only see the 'chick' part of it: bit underpowered, easy to drive.

Question should be, are you comfortable enough with your sexuality to own one?

LOL...make it a coupe, put a ford badge on it, call it an escort and it suddenly ok?

They are good, sure some of them look a bit soft but some nice rims and stance and I think they are good.

Better than driving a corrolla for a daily thats for sure. And the best point...

RWD FTW!

Same knuckle draggers that pay out the GT86. Its not about power but fun, expense and just driving.

Id like to own a turbo one with some handling mods, not much would get near you on the bends.

But to answer the Q, they are 'seen' as a girls car, but who cares! Plenty of blokes drive little butterbox hatches that, lets be honest more chicks drive but they dont get a 'girls car' tag.

I've noticed the thing that anyone who regards the MX5 as a girls/hairdressers car or whatever has in common, is that they know very little about cars.

Change the M to an R and put a rotary in it, it would have been such a man's car

In my last comment, I wasn't hating on MX-5s or insisting they are only for females. If a man likes them and owns one then good on him. Many men drive hatches these days, while they aren't stereotypically masculine, they would be silly to own anything else for what they need them for.

Any car is a girls car. If it is a girl who owns it.

Nothing more to it really.

My brother in law supercharged his. Everything else was bog standard. Ultimate sleeper - went like the proverbial from a shanghai.

Girls car? Nope. Even in standard guise, they've won 2 wheels car of the year awards. They could do with a little more power (easily solved) but handle and steer fantastically.

The best thing about them is that there are so damn many people who write them off as a "girls car", when in fact they're an amazing, perfectly balanced, adequately powered little rear drive car with a stunning array of modifications available from mild to wild...it keeps the prices down a bit as "real men" walk right on by to something else and pass up the chance to discover how to drive a car with lower power but a better chassis.

Fantastic cars, and still an awesome classic. I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Sums it all up right there...some people just can't understand how a car can be "fun" without a massive lump up front putting out as many kilowatts as possible (even to the point of being realistically too much for a daily driver) and a chassis that only really understands straight lines and for whom nothing but 0-100 and 1/4 mile times matter...

It would be interesting to take some people to a twisty mountain road and strap them into a well-prepped Mazda MX5, an old Mini Cooper S, an MGB, or even a new Toyota 86, and tell them to drive back and forwards until they get the point of such cars...hint: it isn't horsepower.

Nope... A bloke around the corner from my joint drives one into work most mornings... Cage, TE37's (or copies - haven't looked at them closely enough), some nice camber and a front mount.... Looks tough...

Would I buy one... Absolutely.. They are an absolute weapon on the track..

I don't buy into the whole "It's a hatch or two door sports car, so it has to be a chicks car" arguement..

I changed from driving a BA Falcon to an NB MX5. It suits my needs/wants more.
I can see how people would call it a girls car, with its small size and not very masculine features. Do I care though? Not really; laugh at me all you want.
Oddly enough however in all the years that I have had it, not one peson has called me out for owning one (to my face anyway)...
