Just curious if people are starting to map out a plan in regard to the inevitable demise of both Falcon and Commodore ? If you want a large car (post 2016) are you concerned as to your affordable options being seriously compromised, especially if looking for one that handles and performs well ?
Will we live to really lament the death of the Australian motor vehicle industry when we're driving around in some Asian built under-performing, moderatly handling medium / large car that's a pale shadow of what we've enjoyed over so many years ? Do you have a plan, or does one just go with the flow and buy the best car that meets their expectations whenever the time is right to update and hope that technology makes up for the difference ? Just buy one of the very last Australian made performance cars and run it forever and a day until its done and dusted and /or buy another A to B car for everyday commuting and maximise the longevity of their last Australian made performance car ? Is that a good plan, thoughts ? Last edited by Rodge; 28-10-2013 at 02:18 PM. |

I don't buy, typically I buy 5 year old cars.
I have until around 2020 before I'm conflicted. By then I'll be close to retirement and I'll be driving a classic so it won't matter.

Still have my heart set on the last GT/XR8 as the family car for the Mrs. This will likely hold us out till 2022+. However if the last Falcon isn't a sensational car, our current GHIA will have to last another 5 years and I will be ordering my A45 (because that is a sensational car and my wife said I could).

Buy one of the last Falcons at some point (either an XR6T or XR8) as a keeper and not bother with anything else after that.
Well, obviously I will bother with cars as we will probably need a new family wagon at some point but that is a different kettle of fish.

I love my falcon. its good enough room in it for everything I need, It's go good power, good handling, looks sexy! there isn't a lot on the market that meets all of this, not even in factoring in that its Australia owned and built!
I don't know if ill buy a another one but my ba xr6 will stay with me for a long time. If something dies ill just have to replace it. Either a ford part from somewhere or replace it with some off another car. Not the best idea money wise, but this is an Australia car which is an icon and oneday will be a rare car. She is my bride and joy. I will find away for her to live as long as I do.

If I ever need a large sedan I will assess the market and see what is on offer from all makes within the budget I have set.
In turn I may even decide against a sedan, finding another type of vehicle to suit my needs. I have learnt my lesson and will never again pigeon hole myself into a particular type of vehicle or make just because I like the brand. Just because I like Ford doesn't mean my next car will be one.

I will add this,...One of the major reasons I am not tuning my SC GT-P is to maximise its longevity. I have real concerns about whether the FH XR8 / XR6T will offer the same level of cred my current car has so there's a pretty good chance the car I already have is it for me as far as Australian made cars go.

When parts are no longer available for my eb and ba then ill go and buy a riceburner like the 2010 lancer i previously owned, the quality and reliabilty of ricers is much higher than ford or holden anyway,my lancer crapped all over my 2012 fg turbo ute in every way apart from outright power.
Should have kept the lancer, trading it in for a new ford was Ricer all the way!!!!! |

I'll have my butt firmly planted in the drivers seat of a Mustang GT V8 Premium with track pack.
I'm a "glass-half-full" kinda guy.

Go and hide in a bunker with my tinfoil hat on and scream repeatedly "THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING".
Seriously though, if this is of utmost importance then I feel sorry for those actually comtemplating a plan.

Slightly off topic but want to clarify something here and not trying to start a heated debate !
While I'm open to all genres of cars, I think the lancer evolution is an amazing piece of kit, I wouldn't go as far as to say 'it craps over the falcon' That's the sort of attitude towards Australian cars that led to the Falcons demise.....people thinking Aussie cars have been superseded by imports in every way. The two different cars are designed for two different things. The ute, being a rugged Aussie car to comfort our big aussie bums on our crappy roads and rough terrains while being able to carry a slab or 5 in the back, a swag and an eski, while still having a bit of go straight power to wow the average driver The lancer, being a small, nimble car designed to hold traction and molest corners and not really be able to hold anything more but a subwoofer in the boot and a souvlaki in the centre console A car like that will not suffice as a replacement for the Falcon. It's a unique car............ It's a family car, a performance car, a work car, a wow-factor car, an a-to-b bomb, a reliable work horse, a grand tourer, a tower-of-caravans, a 'shove all your mates in and go out in comfort' car, ETC all in one........not to mention its racing heritage and tradition. It's an iconic car in itself, and with the death of it will be the end of a true legend.

Keep my GS as a weekender, most likely get a Mustang (only if it's a V8), and throw a party that the Commodore is dead gone.
