I picked up a truck today, to help parents move house.
An off hand comment by the lady behind the desk as she was taking down my details, she says, oh you've been here recently. Someone with my licence hired a car in January and claimed flybys for it as well.. I don't have flybys and I didn't hire a car then either! I don't know how they would have got my licence, as I've had just the one issued to me since 2010 (In WA we can pay our licences 5 or 1 yearly) Should I go to the police with this? I'm a bit confused by it all!

If she was just going by license numbers the girl behind the counter could have written the other hirer's number down wrong.
Did they also have your name, address and contact number on file?

I'd ask them some more questions first, was it photo license they saw or did they just take his word for it. Ask what did hired, explain to them what's happened so they can ask for my ID if he comes in again.
If they say it was a photo license I would definitely be reporting it, could be identity theft and who knows how many fines may have been racked up in your name, check the Dept of Transport website, it will tell you when you punch in your license number. May have also used it as ID to commit frauds.

I pressed her as best as I could, she basically said that it was me, as they always check photo id against the person renting vehicles.
Licence number and address matched. At the time I was confused and thought maybe I DID rent a car and forgotten, but I've gone through my diary now and know for a fact that I didn't. I will get more information from her tomorrow. I find it odd if it is identity theft, that this is all it seems they have done with it.

No that's the strange thing, nothing gone missing money wise, nor any odd transactions.

This was a while ago, I was in a video store and the guy says: "You have a movie that is overdue and hasn't been returned."
Despite the fact that I hadn't been in that store for ages. As it turns out, one of my Relo's actually managed to use my account WITHOUT a password or video store card. To say the least I was VERY ****ed off. I thought about giving a gob-full of abuse to the ****ing ****head who thinks that it is Ok to allow this sort of security bs avoidance to happen. Then I realised the fact is the person who would be receiving said abuse probably wouldn't be the one who initially caused the issue. Also, I did confront the said Relo. Said Relo is a ****head too. I closed my account. Then the store shut down permanently, like all video stores. |

You didn't mention if they were late in returning the vehicle etc.
Budget / Avis have a database of names they are not to rent to due to fraud etc. I guess if you were able to hire again they returned the vehicle on time. This is certainly a police matter. They may even have a video of the guy. Problem is, the only outcome you may get is a reference number..

Certainly go to the police asap. If the car rental place can confirm it was your details used, then who knows what else they're using your details for? If you don't go to the police first, i'm sure in due time they'll come to you! The crim is probably hiring cars/things in your name and doing god knows what else using your name...

Similar thing happened to Craig Thomson - someone used his license and credit card at a brothel.

Perhaps it could be tracked by the flybuys number? they should have no problem giving you the details, since they think its you anyway..

Several years later I went to apply for a loan and found that I had an outstanding $7000 mobile phone bill. Sure enough, someone had used my details to get a phone service and never paid. It was an absolute pain in the neck to get things sorted out but I finally did and got my credit rating back. Report it and cover yourself.

No no no... This approach would be common sense to most people till you find a person who will not help you and sprout 'privacy' laws...

I had an experience where a neighbour was using my identity to do all sorts of things so I did an investigation on myself under the freedom of information act and found out what he had done. It only cost $30 at the time to investigate myself.
I then had a legal precedent to refer back to if his behaviour escalated and he continued to use my identity in the future which would protect me if claims were made against me. As it turned out, although it wasn't possible to prove that it was him, alerting him via legal means that an investigation was underway was enough to stop him. The thing is it is nearly impossible to catch identity thieves and it is really difficult to prove that it is not you making the purchases unless you have written records of action taken in the past if it happens again in the future. Get something on record about it now for peace of mind.

One thing that I would do is check your credit report. See if there is anything on there that you have not applied for.
Most identify theft occurs for finical gain not, just to use someone’s ID. The two companies that doe credit reports in Australia and you can get these for free is http://dnb.com.au/ http://www.mycreditfile.com.au/home/...redit-file.dot Get your report from both companies as you may see things on one report that is not on the other report. When you get more info from the hire car place, take it to the police. |

unless her eyesight is shithouse and she wont admit it ,its possible, and she had a quick glance at the pic also the possibility she is lying, could be just saying that they always check photo id, because who as a business owner is going to say they dont do that?

Most likely the person had no licence and found someone or themselves had the skills to create one using your licence details, I've heard this happens a lot. Especially if someone has been disqualified from driving for 10 years or something, if they are smart enough and have some $$$, they source fake licences, get through RBT checks, hire cars if needed etc.

Ok it's been sorted now..
When she said I had been in back in January, I assume she meant her store...No, it was thrifty in Karratha, when I picked up a vehicle for a friend of mine up there, as I was the driver, they took my licence details. So brain fade on my part, but that's why I didn't know about it though, because I didn't pay for it! So thanks for the replies guys, some were rather hilarious! Facepalm for me
