Thinking of buying a 40ft shipping container to store a couple of falcons in.
Has anybody had experience with this? Do falcons fit width wise? Is there a benefit in getting a high walled container vs a standard one? Was even thinking of buying two and sitting them several metres apart and in time roofing the space between them. |

Can't advise from a personnel perspective but I know when I was younger and first started in the mining game, 1997, one of our big bosses had a shipping container at work that was welded shut and there was a phase III sitting in there. Never seen the contents but I know they treated it with kid gloves when he moved on and they loaded it on a truck.

I guess it would depend on the weather in your area, condition of the cars and how well you want to keep them, condensation inside the container would be an issue.
I imagine a dehumidifier would be beneficial, much like having one in a gun safe. |

I know when you ship a car in a container they recommend you wind all the windows down to avoid a mouldy ruined interior.

As Sniper83 says, it depends where you are situated. I know that condensation is an issue in the tropics. A lot of people that use them as sheds and so on in North Qld put a corrugated iron roof over the top of them with a 4 to 6 inch air gap and that seems to make them a lot better. You just weld the brackets onto the top of the container.
Width wise they're okay for storage but not much else. Standard container is about 2.4 wide and a Falcon is about 1.8 or so at the extremities, so you don't have much room either side. Nice and secure though. Russ. |

Yes I was a bit worried about condensation. Perhaps some ventilation via a wirly bird on the roof.
The corro on top idea sounds good too, it would delay any rust issues. Glad to hear falcons will fit in nicely. |

keep them off the ground for starters
condensation is the biggest prob heard stories of people pulling cars out after ten years and had rust probs they are corten steel so you cant just whip out the welder and stick in a whirly check the door rubbers too there are also small vented holes at the top inside of some usually about 4 or six of them i personally wouldnt use one to store a car gets too hot AND too cold here, bit worried about condensation.

Containers are Ok for short term but condensation would be a problem for long term.

What if you padded the walls and ceiling and carpeted the bottom?

Ventilation is the biggest issue, the vent holes in them do diddly squat.
I unload containers at work and sometimes it's like working in the rain. |

I got the idea of a shipping container as a cheaper and quicker alternative rather than extending my shed. But it seems it will cause me more trouble than it is worth in the long run. Maybe they're good just for storing all the bits and pieces that you seem to acquire over the years that clog up your shed.

I kept my v8 Capri in one for three years and worked well. I cut the top out of 6x20L oil drums and filled them with concrete and sat the container on them so the air could circulate under it. Then just made a ramp into it.

Yes mine was on acreage. Might ruffle a few feathers in suburbs. $2500 I paid for my sea container.

Got a bit of land so no problem there. Would tuck it in behind my shed as it would fit nicely.
