You'll need to find the compliance plate or confirm from GM the build date.
Club guys are pretty **** about that stuff and doubt they will risk having their own club rego right revoked for the sake of registering someones car without knowing the exact build date. Are you a member of a club? Just ask the club rego registrar If you are not a member good luck getting club rego in 6 months, the majority of clubs will need you to be a member for 12 months before you can access their club rego scheme. |

As it is currently registered you won't have any troubles with age etc as the registration details will be used. Ring around to club technical officers and they will tell you their requirements. With my 81 Goldwing I had no problems with joining the VJMC and getting club rego almost straight away.

Because it's an 86 and it's now just 2016, you will need exact build date. If you wait till next year then you won't all they need to know it's an 86.

GM model year for 1986 was from 1-sept-1985 to 31-aug-1986 so if it has 6 months full rego on it now, that will get you to July, and you only have to wait out August to be 100% sure that it exceeds 30 years.
