Default Vfacts march 2016

http://www.caradvice.com.au/430599/m...rs-and-losers/

Australian new vehicle sales were down slightly in March 2016 over last year’s mammoth tally, with 104,512 units registered meaning a drop of 0.5 per cent.

March sales are usually high because it’s the end of the Japanese financial year. However, the top-selling car in March was Korean — the Hyundai i30, skating to first thanks to strong factory drive-away deals.

VFACTS figures released this morning by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show that the March figure was sufficient to keep the market on all-time record pace after the end of the first-quarter of 2016.

The March 2016 figures saw Australia’s most populous state, NSW, continue its recent boom, with registrations there up 6.5 per cent. But every other state or territory bar the ACT (up 3.6 per cent) went backwards, with WA the worst performer, down 7.8 per cent.

As has become the usual fashion, SUV sales grew 8.3 per cent to 38,437, while passenger car sales fell 9.4 per cent to 43,652. SUVs had a market share of 38 per cent, compared to 41.5 for passenger cars. Meanwhile, light commercials grew 7.1 per cent to 19,741.

The fastest-growing segment was Medium SUVs (up 12.9 per cent) to 14,769, making this type of vehicle (led by the Mazda CX-5) the second most popular after small cars (ie. the Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3).

Sales of people-movers (up 12.2 per cent), small SUVs (up 7.6 per cent), large SUVs (up 5.4 per cent), medium vans (up 10.2 per cent), 4×2 utes (up 11.7 per cent) and 4×4 utes (up 6.2 per cent) were also strong.

On the flip side, micro cars (down 24.8 per cent) and light cars (down 18 per cent) fell drastically — are low fuel prices responsible? In fact, every passenger segment bar people-movers was down, as were upper large SUVs (by 9.3 per cent).

Another positive growth sales month!

We just spent a month in the States where we drove a Fusion/ Mondeo down the west coast. I must wonder why Ford don't move more of these than they do. The only fault that I found with it was the plastics around the stereo and climate controls looks a bit cheap but for overall quality, drive and economy it's an awesome car.

We had a Mustang in Florida and I really hope ours are built to a higher quality than theirs. Goes like stink and looks mean but it's fit and finish wasn't the greatest.

Once Falcon is finished, expect to see Mondeo sales increase. I suspect there is a still a degree of sales protection for Falcon.

Before Mondeo sales can increase something will have to be done about supply.

A six month wait won't cut it...

Ah yes, the old supply issues. The reason why certain models don't sell. Is this the same issue affecting the Fiesta and Focus?

I know the low Falcon figures get picked on here sometimes, but the Aurion is a spectacular failure with the numbers it is getting. Considering most of those sales would be fleet. Toyota would be embarrassed by that.

Hyundai are doing very well. What many don't notice is the the top seller is a hatch called the i30. The sedan version of the same car is called the Lantra. If the sale figures for these 2 cars are added, which they should, the i30's lead would be greater.

After all, the Corolla figure includes all body styles.

Have any of you guys have driven (for any length of time) a small late model Japanese or Korean car ?

Most (not all) are very competent, quite reliable cars. I had a close look at some of these supposed 'crappy' Asian cars recently & I found them to be well built, well finished vehicles that were actually fun to drive, with more than adequate performance. The two that I looked at closely, were an Hyundai i30 & a Holden Trax.

When you throw in their long warranties, low drive-away pricing with all their hi-tech gadgets, how can they can compare with cars of yesteryear.

I love my classics, but there is a place for a low priced, good quality daily driver.

You lost any sense of believability when you mentioned Holden trax. A friend of mine bought one new 6-7 months ago, what an abomination.

Just spent a week in a Corolla Accent Hatch.
Apart from the CVT gearbox, I was genuinely surprised at how comfortable it was and its dynamic ability.

Not my kind of vehicle, but can see the appeal I suppose.

Not really Toyota don't care about Aurion. It comes down the same line as the Camry, uses pretty much the same parts...

The only people buying Aurions are government. I reckon they would be lucky to retail 20 to private buyers per month, they are built to order for the likes of QLD police.

Surely alarm bells are ringing in FORD HQ ????? someone must be concerned at the dismal sales in Australia???? Hyundai drop the price of the i30 and sales go through the roof. Cannt Ford see that the Fiesta, Focus etc are overpriced???? thats the publics perception...and cannt get supply is also a problem,,Who wants to wait 6 months for a Mondeo?? FORD found another 2,000 Mustangs, why cannt they do that with their other cars????

Agreed but also remember Aurion is essentially just one engine with bells and whistles added to distinguish between models in the range.
Falcon has 4 engines (ecoBoost, I6, I6T and V8) that cover their range.

Those cars were likely ordered back in September.

I ordered a Mondeo back in November. The dealer has advised me that delivery will be mid May.

From fleet buyers you mean?

I doubt private buyers of Falcons will automatically become Mondeo buyers.

Dr Terry
We purchased a new Suzuki Swift just before xmas. $15,200 on road with 5 yr warranty. It drives really well and the build quality is street ahead of our Territory.

I have a mate who used to be the service manager for one of Melbourne's largest Holden dealers. After coming back to the country, he then worked in the servicing department for a dealer who sold both Ford and Kia.

To this day, he swears that the Kia was the best brand cars to work on. More reliable than the other two and easier to work on.

Looking at the Commodore sales, they aren't too bad. It still sells quite well (7th) in such a competitive environment. Surely there is a case to continue a Commodore model manufactured overseas with the same configuration as the current model.

Even utilising GM's under pinning's from future Camaro models to save costs, I am sure there would be a case to make a model with say 4cyl engines and V8 engines from GM. Build the thing in Thailand or wherever, and sell to the current markets, left hand and right hand.

I have dealt with the Falcon going (just about gone now) and with the Stang it helps. But the Commodore is the last chance we have of buying an affordable, RWD, large car with the option of a V8....

What you tend to forget is that the Commodore sells at these numbers because it is still being subsidised via various methods. Firstly there is the number of sales that are guaranteed due to forced government/agencies purchasing requirements. Secondly the handouts that are still being given by the governments (State and Federal). Take away these guarantees from an imported commodore and its sales drops, and its also likely to become dearer (which again is anti sales).

I don't plan on buying one myself cause the Mondeo just does not do for me! Interestingly I am starting to see a couple of station wagons!

Cheers, Brent

It wont become dearer if built elsewhere in bigger quantities.

Australia still need a decent rwd v8 sedan for under $50,000.

I did

Whether it's fleet or private, it is still a sale that will be reflected in the VFacts. Only time will tell whether Mondeo sales will increase when Falcons are gone, but the way I see it, to buyers of non-high-performance Falcon sedans (base or G6E sixes or Ecoboost), the Mondeo offers everything a Falcon does and more.
