Hi
I need some advice. I'm looking to grab a piece of FPV but unsure on which direction to go. Ba GT or Typhoon? It will be daily driver to begin with and occasional driver after that and will be kept many years. Budget is $15k max. Gt is a strong badge but the turbo 6 was a game changer. Any thoughts welcomed. |

Save some more money, $15k doesn't buy much from the FPV stable.

Spend 15k and expect to spend another on 2-5k on maintenance/servicing/repairs

There is some truths in the above but BA1's are definitely around for $15k...and the ones that are $18k will sell for $15k because no one is buying them.
If it wasnt for the paint mismatching there is a nice Manderin BA GT on carsales. I think you have already summed it up. GT will always be popular with the diehards although those same diehards dismiss anythign that doesnt have real chrome. The F6 as you said changed everything and is arguably the better car if you can live without the V8 note. Both are good buys at the moment. Find one that is near $18k and make an offer.

Now days its case by case. Find the right car you want, hope the buyer needs to get rid of it and do a deal. edit: This one....how did they ever let that colour go with the poor plastic/metal mis match though. Shame otherwise seems the pick of the current "cheap" ones. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...4134770/?Cr=39 If you can stomach an auto then this is also good; http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...4128625/?Cr=14 Shame about the faker shaker.

The only good old cars are the ones you have owned since brand new.

As for the 'faker shaker' - if it's plumbed in it flows cold air into the intake, so does what a shaker is supposed to do, so what's fake about that? I'd go the purple one - if you believe the description, it was an elderly lady's daily driver.

I have my tornado up for 22k but would require no money spent on it. Essentially it's a 16/18k car with fresh mods and servicing.

For me it'd be a no brainer, definitely the GT. Can't beat the sweet, sweet sound of a good 'ol V8 burble at the lights and roar when revving.

If it's a daily drive, go for the Typhoon.
The GT is a better weekend car, as you don't need to worry about fuel costs, seeing you won't drive it every day or every weekend. |

If you only have $15k to spend, I would suggest getting the newest XR6 turbo you can afford. Either that or keep saving because if you put $25k towards it you could get one hell of a car.
I would really like an FPV too but to be truthful I don't think they are really worth the premium price over a run of the mill Falcon and I don't think they will be a wise financial investment either (just in case that's your angle). I think for $15k you would only be able to get a fairly "undesirable" FPV or maybe a desirable one that has had a hard life. Basically I would get an FG or FG2 XR6T over a BA GT any day but that's just me and my opinion. |

I would go the GT, just for the sound. Couldn't go wrong with either of the ones Polyal picked out of carsales.

with the 5.4 cars personally I would take the typhoon... however the 5.4s are still great cars to drive and plenty of fun.

Picked up my BA Typhoon just over 2 years ago for 10k then spent another 2k on it just doing some basic maintenance and some small cosmetic things.
It had 163,000 kms when I bought it and now has over 180,000kms on her...... I could not be happier, the Typhoon is my daily and I love it......will be keeping her for a very long time! |

In my opinion I honestly don't see modern day GT's (or modern day anythings) ever fetching ridiculous prices like the old ones do. Happy to be proven wrong, I just don't see it. |

I would lean toward a good, fun old school V8 GT.
As much as I love my Miami, any time I want to have the slightest bit of fun (illegal here in WA) you know that if Mr plod is in the vicinity you go straight to gaol...do not go past go and collect $200. Sometimes too much power isn't such a good thing. (Did I just say that????)

BA GT Manual would be what I would be looking for as a keeper.
In a performance type car a manual will always be more desirable, some people prefer autos, and they are great for taxis and daily drivers, but for a spirited blast through the mountains manual is where it's at IMO.

Any GT before the 5.0 S/C engine, then manual is the go.
Anything that has the 5.0 S/C is way better in the auto. I have both and the auto leaves the manual for dead every time. |

Go and test drive both and buy the one that you like driving the most...
For me, it would be a manual GT.

Manual BA GT will be the slowest FPV of the lot. IMO Typhoon will be the go, yeah the GT is a GT, but reality is the GT boys don't exactly care For BA GTs just like they don't care for anything after '73 4V head toploader cars.
Get a Phoon....my stock Phoon is much more enjoyable than any stock Boss 290 GT. |

The OP needs to go and test drive both and make his own decision for alas these I6T v V8 threads always end the same way. The reality though is that the Boss powered cars are relatively bulletproof. They track extremely well and can take a repeated beating on your favourite circuit or round your fave twisty roads for hours without dumping their guts. One car will "give you good time ". While the other will " love you long time". Lol I've said it on here heaps but my FPV track day really highlighted how well the Boss powered cars can perform lap after lap after lap in stinking hot conditions while the "love you good time" cars didn't fare so well after just half the laps. BA GT is a classic in its own right. 1st of breed , the return of an icon and a great drive in manual form. I6t is better in many ways and a sharper tool for sure so the only way to decide is to go and drive them yourself. oh....and many would say there is no real GT after a manual XYGT... Everyone else is just driving imitations of an idea after that.

I guess it's personal taste...
Maybe just look for both and buy the best FPV you can for 15K based on condition, what ever comes first GT or Phoon. Both have their advantages / drawbacks. When I bought my Phoon I wanted BF R-spec but could not decide Manual or Auto and decided to buy the best car regardless of transmission and bought an auto with 50,000km on the ODO, very happy with the choice, love the car. IMO you'll be happy with either a GT or a F6 so let the "gods" decide. |

You can only really compare the cars when they are brand new. For $15k you will get all sorts of good and bad fpv cars, so It's very hard to get a apples for apples comparison due to the different km / condition of a used car.
The better condition / lower km car is the better option for your $15k, be it GT or typhoon. But assuming both are similar condition or new. Typhoon is the quicker car but lacks presence, heaps more potential for your tuning Buck. The GT has the emotive feel about it, not as fast but it's about the theatre of it all. The boss sounds fantastic, there's just something about the V8 and the boss290 has more than enough go. For since the 1992 EB model the I6/I6t has been on par performance wise but doesn't have the V8 character or premium feel. I've owned both and I'd go GT all things equal condition wise. |

Hi mate, drive both. I guarantee you will love the rush of the turbo though. Factor in bushes, brakes and maybe even clutch etc which may arise with a budget of 15K.

As everyone else has said, drive both. See which you'd prefer to drive.
Personally my experience wont help you cause each motor has its good and bad points, and is partially why i have 2 cars as keepers, so i can drive the V8 one day and the 6T another. |
