Have heard it was a shocker - estimated 40% drop in sales compared to 2019.
Ford and Hyundai sold just over 2000 units with most others under the 2000. VW sold 1300 units.

Yep to be expected.
Us, like many though, have experienced a bit of an increase in enquiry traffic in the past week.

Yeah 40-50% drop is what they are expecting. But as above, has been improving over the last week or so.

Bit of an exaggeration. Most of the population is still working, but people aren't willing to spend money in hard times, business's are loath to spend money, and people are avoiding going out in public. Not to mention some cars aren't going to make it here anytime soon, cause most of the manufacturing plants are closed.

Forget spending on a car, we haven't even gone through a full tank of fuel since this started! Fuel at cheap prices and you can't drive anywhere to use it...

Dowling reports that a fair amount of the sales drop has to do with finance rejections.
Dealers are reporting that more loan applications are being rejected than accepted and that's unprecedented. Finance companies are asking applicants to lodge letters explaining why their jobs are essential under current conditions, pilots are getting knocked back and lots of others who would have been walk up starts to finance are now falling over. The CEO of the Australian Automotive Dealers Association has said that one of the major reasons for reduction in new vehicle sales over the past few years is risk aversion by finance companies. few years has been due to tightening of finance, even more so in the past few months. What we see from outside may well be skewed by our own misperceptions, I choose to believe the overview of the dealer association that financing new vehicles has been getting harder over the past few years, regardless of the past few months and cv-19, that's been the brutal icing on the cake. |

Having said that, yes, at present it is harder to get finance because banks want to know your income is rock solid. After the commission in to financing it has definitely become harder - plenty more hoops to jump through to get approved - specifically where people are financing purchases at a level that they probably can't afford - so all this has done is reduce the number of people doing 'irresponsible' things.. so, in effect, sales numbers were a false sense of security so to speak...

Amazing result for Toyota.
One in four units sold in April was a Toyota. https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&r...qizFs94zDXfOIs

Be even worse if 30000 odd cars weren't written off in canberra back in January. Insurance is still going through the claims.

Far out, Toyota sold more Hilux's than Ford did its entire fleet.

Probably because Toyota does a lot of fleet and isn't impacted as much by private buyers.

What has supply been like?
What's the time frame between a car leaving a foreign port and arriving on a local lot? 6-8 weeks? By now I assume any manufacturing hold ups should have hit us locally? Catch 22 - no one is spending so provide discounts, possibly no stock for months once local cars are sold.

That plus the generous instant tax write offs granted to business buyers at the moment.

In a normal month Ford sells more 4x4 dual cabs than Toyota does. Those are the profit makers, especially compared to a base model. |

No doubt, but then Toyota also sell lots of other SUV/4x4 models which more than makes up for the deficit in 4x4 ute's.

It’s hard looking at the carnage, retail sales took a huge bath
but fleet sales and people with cash and or secure jobs kept sales prevented an even worse blood bath. I guess those remaining sales are the quasi fleet holding everything together, kinda gives us an idea of true retail Proportions compared to non virus months.... Hopefully May is the last of the really brutal sales months. |

Government fleet sales were only down about 12%. It was the hire car market and private buyers where the carnage was.
Partly explains why Toyota did ok. Not sure how things will look over the next couple of months in terms of supply. With overseas factories being closed for about 2 months, and still yet to re-open in some places, you would have to think the wait times to get certain models here will blow right out. |

Yep, our Hilux SR5 has just turned 4 years old. With the Tax write off we will be off to get another one before the EOFY. Will test drive a Ranger as well this time. Not overly impressed with the Auto in this model Hilux. That being it's only "fault" . But resale value is normally so good...........
