I watched it last night. He was very close to winning the 500cc World Championship a second time, in 1988. |

Damn, forgot, hope it gets repeated.
Use to love watching him spinning up the back tyre going into corners, leaving a big black mark, what a rider. When he was racing V8s he was known as Captain Chaos. His boys doing pretty good at the moment too in bike racing.

Yep I recorded it and seen it last night.
I walked out of the Lodge and this dude was talking about Gardener and I started ratting with him about such, I have seen the story some years ago. He was going on about how people hate Gardner etc. well yes that's the way it goes in the pits for a start in such things, I could wright a book about such spac attacks I have seen in MX it can get vey heated. He won that ride when he was over the limit as well from the night before, that was amazing. I know that I am hopeless hooking in riding or driving after a big night out. I learnt not to do that and I enjoyed hooking in much better. I worked it out one day that a mate had it all over me out on the bike and I just could not get him anywhere on the track, and he still boast about that day 30 years ago. I did not feel drunk driving in the morning to go ride. and I thought before that that getting done for DD in the morning after was just a load of BS. but I am riding much quicker than anyone on the road does mind. Good on Gardner, he gave it his all and loves the sport. The best racing was back in them days by far. |

agree the days of then with Rainy/Schwantz/Lawson/McElnea/Mamola/Chilli/Spencer/Magee following on with Doohan coming etc were bloody great days - 500 wild weapons awesum stuff.
WG put us on the map big time - he did near on lose it so many times riding over the limits epic to see. The power slide era followed by Doohans long lines was horny as to watch. Yes its always a cut throat world in the Pits, dog eat dog and then there's those who keep to themselves, ego is the word. I've been around the Pit and round teams in MX for a long long time, my Bro to this day is heavily involved last 30+yrs, a Honda devotee as well. I'm afraid the goss we got to hear from HRC honchos and others didn't put a bright light on ol WG, he was his own worst enemy to a degree, maybe the young fast Doohan coming through was getting in the back of his mind, just a thought I still admire what he achieved (7 wins 10poles) against some top riders again as mentioned an epic era.

I just watched it today on iview as well. Laughed at the state of philip island when they decided to develop it, also at the 'black duck' (swan) ad and them promoting PI.

Loved watching them all compete but always had a soft spot for this guy, that is when he wasn't getting thrown through the air. *no bike sound warning.. |

I hear you very very much re CS but the discussion is on the mighty late '80's re WG early '90's hence not quoting him for his GP Rookie season debut was '06 as you may recall.
Man now I'm feeling old ! Ironic when we've talked about the great power sliding era of back then and who brouight it back CS what a bloody rider and more so glad it was on a ill handling Duke sticking it up the Japs first off then to VR ...... Miss him dearly.
