What style of light fittings do you have in the garage and whats the desired effect? Also are you wanting to replace fittings or retro fit existing fittings?

And what do you want to do in the garage? The light level you will want/need will be different if you're simply storing your cars in there versus doing detailing work versus working on your cars in there at night time, for eg.

There is loads of different options, like anything how long is a piece of string. If say your existing fitting is a 36w fluoro with an iron core ballast, something like an osram substitube is a straight swap (electronic ballasts need to be wired out). Say the existing fitting is a 35w/50w 12v down light, yes you can get LED retrofit lamps, but its cheaper and you get a better result swapping the fitting to a LED panel fitting.
Then theres colour choice. So with most retrofit LED lamps they're a fixed colour. So warm white, cool white or daylight. Complete LED fittings, a lot are tri colours. By that theres a switch on the back of the fitting so you can select from the 3 colours. Then theres dimmable LEDs and non dimmable. Being for a garage id assume thered be no dimmer but for say your lounge room it might be a consideration. So ive had a lot of experience with lighting design, that being said, main consideration is the customers needs. My carhold is a colourbond with bare battons on the rafters, it has no gyprock ceiling. I just use it for storage so the osram LED tubes are good enough for me. Now this is again all up to how far you want to go, but if i had a carhold with a gyprock ceiling and wanted the best from ceiling lighting id go something like an SAL 1200mm x 300mm rectangular LED panel with a gyprock mounting kit. A couple years back wholesale those fittings would cost $40 each. Last edited by .:4:.; 11-07-2022 at 11:45 AM. |

Unrelated, so rgbs and bluetooth is nothing new. A few years back i was talking to a bloke who took the rgb thing and bluetooth and developed a reader pen that works with the books he developed. So kind of a gimmik but he designed it for childrens books. So how it worked was as the parent read the book, theyd run the pen over it and the lamp would change colour. So for example if the evil queen came into the story, the light would turn red. He sold the idea to Disney for a silly amount of money. |

So in my proffesional career, yes i have set up grow lights indoors in high rise buildings in the comunity areas so tennants can pick fresh herbs or chillis. Sounds like a smart community idea from a building management perspective. Yeah i suppose the idea is great. Like a comunity garden. So people can plant what they want. People can grap a twig of thyme or a chilli, maybe some parcelly or something i dont know how to spell. But theres always the one person who likes doobs and gives it a crack but ruins it for people using the communal garden for the intended purpose. Yep, put a few thousand people in a building, theres always a joker. Hugs not drugs...

1200m pierlite 40w ecobattens are great for garages. Good quality, good output. How many? How long is your string.

So i was never a salesperson, not tied to any brand. Just a regular ****bag sparky who worked comercial. But lighting was my jam.
Not to make a sale, but to give a customer an idea what i would do was samples. So pretty much a a demo in places across the floor so not in places other things for the same demonstration can be seen. That works really well. It means a customer can form their own opinion. But thats a give a week kind of thing. But typically they happy days it. |

Thanks guys, I should have been more specific.
Existing lighting is the old style flouros. Require strong lighting for car panel repair work. Willing to install new wiring. Thinking new overhead and perhaps side lighting with LED's. |

you can Purchase LED tubes pretty cheap to replace the old Fluros. if you doing panel work we used to use those Halogen lamp stands so you could move them to get the light where you wanted, same for painting. you can get LED lamps for those also, but the Halogen ones also double as heaters.

LED retro fit tubes do work, but the light output is the equivalent or only marginally better then a regular fluorescent tube. Yes they save on power, but replacing a say 4 foot fluoro batten fitting with a 4 foot LED batten fitting would give better light output.
As for work lights, the modern LED ones are a lot brighter then the old school linear halogen jobbys. For detailed work they make a lot of sense. |

I have a garage thats is 5.6m by 9.0m and 2.4m high at the sides, with a high pitched roof. 6x double Clipsal fluoros which i put 10.5W LED globes and electronic starters in and its lit up quite well. All of the pics were taken at night.

So yes, if the fluoro fitting has an elctronic ballast you have to wire it out. Old iron core ballasts you can leave in provided you put in the dummy starter. However if you leave an iron core ballast in, yes the LED tube will work perfectly fine, but theres a loss. So not the most energy efficiency compared to deleting the iron core ballast. Its not difficult to do if you have your head around it, but if you dont, find someone to do it for you. |

I went through this a couple of years ago with some slightly weird American made fluoro battens. Once I worked out what wasn’t needed I pretty much gutted them and left only the starter sockets.
My own garage, about to replace six daylight 36W T8s with more of the same at $4.40 apiece. Don’t feel up to another re-wiring job ATM. |

This is the engineer in me, but I'd be starting at what lighting level is required for the type of activity you want to undertake. Referring to AS1680.2.0-1990, Interior Lighting, Part 2 Recommendations for Specific Task and Interiors, Table 2, the following relevant (I've picked a few to show the level of disparity between the different purposes) lux levels are specified:
Carparks 40 lx Garages and Service Stations: General servicing, greasing, pits, washing, polishing 160 lx Repairs 400 lx Paint Shops and Spray Booths Rubbing, ordinary painting, spraying and finishing, fine spraying, painting and finishing 400 lx Probably overkill to start here for a home setup, malbaby and probs more complicated than you want it to be, but if you want to do it right, this is where I'd start.
