Default Ever thought of converting to LPG?

Hi guys,

Just passed a few petrol stations today to see +$1.40 prices!! WTF!!
Of late I have spoke to a few mates who were considering LPG to save $$$!!
So I thought I'd ask.. Have you or will you consider changing to LPG to save money?

Yeah I would if i had the money. But working part-time and studying doesn't really allow you the cash flow for something so expensive.

Plus my eb has only just passed the 130,000km mark, and I do plan on kepping it until its done roughly 250,000km. So for me it would be well worth the money.

NEVER!!
There is no LPG pump here in town, the closest is 52km away!!
I freak out enough as it is with just a bbq gas bottle in the car.

I was last time quoted for an impco system $2300. But the guys who I was gonna get to do the job, sold the place. It was bought out by toyota and is currently run by morons who don't know what customer service is, or how to fix problems on gas systems.

Just did, I am selling my old car after having bought an dedicated E-gas AU. I would have converted my old car, but they dont run so good on gas and iam a long standing Ford fan.

So i said good bye to a reliable luxo barge to buy a reliable taxi (damn oil sheiks)

If you have a good car to start with then I'd say $2300 or thereabouts would be money well spent. And also the engine stays nice and clean running on gas too which is an added benefit.

The only gas car I would get would be a factory E-gas Falcon. I wouldn't bother converting the car I've already got because it would defeat the purpose of getting a V8.

AU 111 V8, convert to gas is $3k. I looked into it. $3k buys a lot of PULP.
I'm not saying it isn't worth it. But, if you do a lot of k's, around 25,000kms'yr, worth it.

Got a E-gas ute so already a convert but to answer your question No I would never convert a car to gas
Had 8 cars that have run on gas the first 6 were conversions and the biggest pain in the tail ever, the last two Ford Factory Dedicated Gas that never caused grief.

The reasons I think most people suffer with conversions is
- Dodgy wiring into the factory Looms
- Fuel pumps that run dry
- Fuel injectors that do not get used enough
- Fuel lines / filters that do not have the flow and throughput to keep themselves clean.
- Poor intergration into the car ie extra fuel gauges instead of intergrated into the dash
- Half of this problem would not exist if the system was set up as a dedicated gas system.
- With the dual fuel options these problems can be reduced if you used the fuel system more often but that is more expensive and defeats the purpose of the conversion in the first place.

Keep at least 1 litre of petrol in the tank. Not too hard.

If you setup the conversion so the car starts on fuel then switches over to gas, it'll be fine

True but even the best have to splice into the looms and over time at least one of those conections may become intermitent (and they are the easiest faults to find arn't they)

Never yet had a fuel gauge that was accurate to 1 litre and when the system uses a little to start each time it can creep up on you ( i used to keep 1/2 a tank of fuel in but I got caught once (and once was enough)

Sorry but had that one too this may not be a problem in southern states but the humidity in N qld is high enough to get past the tank breathers and stuff your fuel.

Me too

Ps I wore out 6 falcons in 9 years repping in Qld and N NSW and averaged 120ooo per year all on gas/petrol, one of them was a 30th edition ea in which i did 394oookm in just under 3 years and for most of that it towed a trailer.

A Decent place will make sure there wiring is good
- Fuel pumps that run dry
You should have fuel in your tank at all times anyway.
- Fuel injectors that do not get used enough
You should run fuel still in your car at least every few days.

You can have your gas gauge wired into your fuel gauge and that is even cheaper and easyer to do then another gauge.

Not realy one of the good things about a dedicated gas system is that you can have your timing advanced a lot more then if you where on fuel .. bigger cam shafts .. cleaner oil .. Better exhaust noise( i think so ) and the best thing is CHEAPER TO DRIVE

Prices for a gas conversion are
EA to ED = $ 1,850.oo
EF to EL = $ 1,950.oo
AU = $ 2,200.oo
BA = $ 2,400.oo
All these are for a sedan if you want a wagon
done it is a extra $400.oo to $600.oo

to right i have and did My fuel bill has gone down $90 a week and resale of my car has gone up as well ..

I'm considering putting the van on LPG. It's a carb engine, no computer BS, can be done very cheap. Might even go dedicated, remove the petrol system all-together.

139.9 cpl for regular tongiht... LPG is 49.5 around here.

In the last year... LPG's jumped from 38.9 average to 52.5 average around here. And petrol... 1.10/L to 1.40? Ouch.

Don't know what's going on, but today the highest I came accross was 49.5 out here where I live. Down in the city (where its usually more expensive then the Western Suburbs) I saw it for 48.9 in some places.

I had a Twin Gas Research setup on a 377 stroker in a LTD and it pulled some serious HP. It was a straight gas setup none of this dual crap. It was awesome when LPG was 19c/l and even up to 30c/l but when it got to 40c/l it was just as cheap to run the car on petrol again.
Can i put my XR6T on Gas ?

Yah to be honest we drove so many of those toys and the little ford did not stck up with what u get with the swift and the price im sorry to say.
Oh and its the ladys car 905 of the time so she liked the look better to oh well.

But I will look at the new Focus x5 yum

Yeh ive converted mine and am enjoying around 80c/L saving... converted about 10 months ago as i do alot of driving when fuel went up over 1.15... and i thought it was steep then! just wish i had of kept a log book, i would have saved over a thousand easily as i travel 500+ kays a week, it cost me 2200 all up and i get similar fuel economy, tis great!

the G.R.A system on my old E.A is coming out this weekend and going on the new car thank god for that. $1.39 unleaded and 47c L.P.G tonight in ADELAIDE.

Nup I'm happy paying PULP....
6.5l/100kms @110km/h
7.1l/100kms round trip.
9.5l/100kms worst ever avg fuel consumption.

At current prices (~125.9) I can get 110kms of mixed city/freeway from $10

Would love to put the Territory on injected LPG ... it just stuffs around the spare tyre and 3rd row seats .... what a pain ... otherwise I'd swap it over. Injected LPG and dual fuel setups have NO issues ... and DSC works perfectly (never a backfire).

I am very happy with my dedicated AUII EGAS ute ... has been great for my line of work ... the minimum amount of kays i do a week is approxiamtely 600km ... and seeing as LPG prices are dropping in Sydney due to Northern Hemisphere's winter is nearing a close and demand for LPG is dropping up there ... prices drop down here.

I am enjoying paying $45 for a dual tank of LPG ... that gets me 600km of inner city heavy load driving.

I'll find out how well it goes for the Melbourne trip this weekend (if it wasn't for my crap fuel gauge though ... LOL). I reckon It'll only cost me $100 for the round trip in gas .... would hate to know what it'd cost for the Territory .... arrrrgh ... it costs nearly $100 just to fill 75-odd litres.

Got a price back on direct injection gas via e-mail this morning, fully installed.

$2362

I'm assuming that they've taken out prices for the tank, filler and gas line, because I already have them. So factor in around another $800 at a stab and you'll have injected gas for around $3200 installed.

I've mentioned in another thread a basic explaination on how direct injection gas works... http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=45285

I cannot see any disadvantages of direct injection gas, because it basically works just like your petrol system does.
