I'm thinking of getting myself a cheap runabout so I can drive that around while I get a whole stack of things fixed on my Mk II 2.0 Escort.
I'm after a car that doesn't cost much more then $500 & is cheap to run, I don't care what it is, as long as it gets me around and doesn't cost much in petrol each week. I don't care if it looks like crap, as long as it runs, because the car I care about is my Escort, not this runabout I'm considering getting. Any ideas what I could get that meets that criteria?

Most $500 cars are that price cos its going to cost a lot more to keep them going or get them past rego. but the occasional bargain will surface, it wont be a small economy car though, people will pay too much for those long after they are uneconomical to run.

Cheapest car we ever bought ($300) great with fuel, and drove well. Stupid us sold it for a slab of beer. :S

Toyota corrolla's are great reliable little cars that you could pick up for stuff all, and run pretty cheap too
Our old 72 corolla paddock bomb went for 10yrs of hard driving with the only real major issues being the clutch, a couple of welsch plugs and the throttle spring! |

Get a gemini, they are **** cheap to run and easy to maintain yourself etc... you could easily pick one up for ~$500.

Get another Escort. Dunno about Aus but in NZ MKII Eskies can be had for well under $500 and will go forever.

Agree with above..You get good car with something like the Sigma's as that size isn't popular as Corrola's Laser's etc...
The old Toyota Corona is reliable if theres NO rust in it, don't worry about timing chain noise...

Well, if you are... here's a couple... 1985 Toyota Corona ST141 CS, 2.0 4cyl Auto 4spd, 209,119km, July 2005 rego, Thomastown VIC $350 - Click Here 1988 Mitsubishi Magna TN GLX, 2.6 4cyl Auto 4spd, 304,000km, October 2005 rego, Ferntree Gully VIC $500 - Click Here Can't find much more, but I've only been looking at $500 or less with active rego. IMO that Corona looks OK. |

yeh i reckon a gemini or an old corrolla too, not square type, and i have heard about sigmas being bad with heads.
or get a datto 120y, 180b 200b etc. plenty of em and really cheap. i think some are pretty reliable too |

i have a hatch back laser(not sure what year or model) with new tires & clutch that i might sell for around 500 but with no rego, shouldnt need anything for RWC....

How about a Nissan Bluebird (or early Pintara)? You should be able to find a decent example on your money, and they should be able to run ULP/PULP with minimal fuss (may need to be de-tuned, but I think they've got hardened valve seats).
I'd say that you should have no trouble finding something, a clean early-mid 80's Japanese car would, IMO, be perfect. Or perhaps an LPG XD-XF? |
