Pointless car, new Falcon XR6 with 6 speed auto has just as much power and near acceleration.
Plus much more interior room.

But the Mazda has (sort of) got AWD and will go where a fat Falcon would get stuck

I can't actually see the pics but to the comment "Why".

Well you may remember the number of AWD Magnas that the police force have tried (and some still have them). They're slower than the FWD Magnas and are very meek for a police car. But the reason they actually used them is because they're bloody useful in suburbia where the AWDs come into their own around corners without losing speed as the RWD/FWD counterparts would.

I assume this is why they recruited the Mazda 6 MPS cop car. Remember, most high speed pursuits are called off in Australia anyway, so absolute speed and acceleration is not everything.

Yes, but actually look at the site. The mazda in question is a community liason vehicle. So speed acceleration etc is irrelevant. It is just for running around the burbs. So why not use it??

Plus based on the plates, I guess it was a freebiefrom Mazda for promotions

They would use less fuel than an XR6T and have superb handling. They are pretty quick from a standing start due to AWD and are suprsingly quick from a rolling start. In the wheels road test an MPS 6 did 80-120 in 3.6 seconds - faster than any stock XR6T for that particular test.

That being said... I'm guessing the "190kw" claim is all but a lie (or a very conservative figure) :

0-100 in 6.6 secs, a 14 quarter + AWD handling and 10.1L/100kms - why not?

Yeah right an N/A XR6 is sticking with that...

Interesting as a promotional vehicle and its paid for by Mazda (not taxpayers) so who cares.

Because its not an Australian made car. I'm firmly against any Government operated vehicles being of foreign origin UNLESS the type of vehicle they need is not produced here.

Falcon XR6 Turbo, Falcon XR8, FPV GT, FPV F6 Typhoon

Commodore SS, HSV Clubsport

All of the above are locally made and provide superior acceleration and top speed to that Mazda. Protect the local industry and end up with a faster car anyway.

That right as government car are only Australian built cars, so Mazde only provided that car as a promo but it won't get approved! :dj:

Don't get me wrong but Mazda done really well in the last few years!

Not quite a standard XR6 is around the 15.5 quater and add around 1 second to the 100k time.

Incorrect, some model madza's, like the bravo at the same made vehicle as the ford courier. Mazda are owned by ford international. Calling a mazda a ford is a little to wide of an area to leave open.

Mazda 6 mps's are roomy, comfortable and a hell of a lot nicer than the interior of any performance ford product, especially if its got the leather pack. So yeah, why not, they are still quick enough.

Well I am firmly against inferior products being held aloft by my tax money. I am in no way saying any of those Aussie performance products are inferior (in fact it is a fairly level playing field), but any of these government contracts (in any field you care to name) should go to the best product for the best price. Some arbitrary crap about where it was made shouldnt really come into it - we want to compete on a world stage then we should keep producing world class products and not rely on handouts.

That's great and all, except for one thing, our market is 1/10th of a grain of sand in a huge beach...

Not even 1,000,000 new cars are sold a year in Australia. The Falcon sales are what, 70,000 a year? That's puny when some cars, like the VW Golf, for example, sell globally almost as many units as our ENTIRE market. Why shouldn't the Government help keep jobs in its own coutnry? I believe any country should protect its industry like such. If our Government started to outsource vehicles, it would kill our car industry.

Yeah... some of them just aren't Fords you know...

Like the Mazda 3 with its chassis shared with Focus, with its 2.0litre Ford Duratec or 2.3litre Ford Duratec engines?

Or the Mondeo/S40/X-Type chassis sharing Mazda 6, which is also powered by Ford's 2.3litre Duratec.

Or the new Mazda 2 which is sharing the Fiesta floorplan and the smaller 1.6 Duratec engine?

Yep, they're not Fords alright... :voldar02:
